Hypertrophy of the labia is their enlargement as a result of impaired sexual development. Less commonly, this problem occurs due to the treatment with estrogens or androgens in childhood, infections, tissue traction or irritation. Hypertrophy can affect the preputium clitoridis, including its outer part, the frenulum, and the body of the labia minora. You can undergo your treatment of hypertrophy of the labia in Germany to restore the aesthetics of the genital organs and get rid of physical and psychological discomfort.

  1. Is it necessary to treat hypertrophy of the labia?
  2. Surgical labiaplasty
  3. Laser labiaplasty
  4. After a labiaplasty

A woman's labia can be reduced with the help of an operation called a labiaplasty. In addition to standard surgical interventions, doctors in Germany use seamless laser techniques, which are more sparing and provide excellent aesthetic results.

You can undergo your treatment in one of the following hospitals: University Hospital of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, University Hospital Erlangen, or University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich.

If you make your treatment appointment through the Booking Health service, we will take care of the arrangement of your trip. The company's specialists will help you to select a specialized clinic and a surgeon, promptly make your treatment appointment, take care of insurance and the absence of overpayments for medical services, arrange flights and accommodation, and provide interpreting services. Any questions during the treatment will be settled by your personal medical coordinator.

Is it necessary to treat hypertrophy of the labia?

There is still no clear definition of what should be considered hypertrophy. Ideas about an aesthetically attractive vulva are individual. The first attempt to define this condition was made in 1949. Having measured the labia minora of 50 women, the authors concluded that 2-5 cm should be considered a normal size. The average length was 35.5 mm, and the width made up 19 mm. However, each culture and geographic region has its own ideas about the norm and aesthetics. Therefore, no diagnoses are required to perform a labiaplasty, but a woman’s desire is enough.

Hypertrophy of the labia does not threaten either a woman's life or health. Therefore, from a medical point of view, there is no need for treatment.

But many women want to have surgery to correct the labia for aesthetic reasons. According to surveys, more than half of women with labia hypertrophy would like to improve their appearance. Among those who have had surgery, 100% of women indicate aesthetic considerations as the only or one of several reasons.

There are also functional reasons for having a labiaplasty, including:

  • pain and discomfort during a sexual intercourse;
  • hygiene problems;
  • irritation during sports activities (cycling, jogging);
  • discomfort when wearing tight clothing.

Many women experience stress, insecurity, and embarrassment and therefore suffer from problems in their private lives.

Thus, labia hypertrophy treatment is not necessary, but a safe and non-traumatic operation will improve your life.

Surgical labiaplasty

A labiaplasty for labia hypertrophy was first performed in 1984. The essence of the operation is a partial tissue removal. There are many ways to perform surgery, but all operations are divided into three types: marginal, wedge and central resection.

Labial cosmetic surgery is performed under local anesthesia. Doctors remove excess tissue and apply sutures. Experienced German surgeons specializing in aesthetic gynecology operate with a low risk of complications and excellent aesthetic outcomes.

Laser labiaplasty

One of the most sparing, safe, and minimally traumatic correction methods is laser plastic surgery on the labia. This procedure shortens rehabilitation and further reduces the risk of complications.

The essence of the procedure is that doctors cut tissue with a laser instead of a scalpel. This can be a neodymium laser (Nd:YAG), a carbon dioxide laser or an erbium laser. German doctors use a sutureless technique. They apply clamps instead of sutures, which are then removed when the wound edges converge. Sometimes the edges diverge a little, but this discrepancy is minimal, does not cause any complications and does not interfere with healing.

After a labiaplasty

A labiaplasty is a minimally traumatic operation that does not require hospitalization. A woman can return from the hospital as early as 3 hours after the intervention.

Doctors prescribe a cream with anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics to reduce swelling and prevent infections.

The need for pain medication after surgery is minimal. If they are applied, within 3-5 days, upon request. As a rule, these are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Within 4 weeks after the operation, a sexual intercourse and intense physical activities are prohibited.

The final results can be assessed after 2 months. A repeated intervention can be performed after 6 months if a woman does not like them. Not to have to undergo the operation again, it is better to immediately contact a good surgeon and get the desired aesthetic result on the first try.

The main reasons for repeated operations are as follows:

  • an area of hypertrophied tissue remains unremoved;
  • a woman's desire to further reduce her labia.
