About the city
Munich is a city located on the Isar River in southern Germany, the federal state of Bavaria. To date, Munich is not only a place of concentration of cultural and museum values, but also a major industrial and research center.
The city offers many historical attractions, the main of which are located near the Marienplatz Square: Old and New Town Halls, old churches. Of particular interest are the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin and the St. Peter’s Church, founded in the XII century. Most of the buildings in the old town are built in baroque and rococo styles. Also, the symbol of the city is the Munich Residence – the palace complex of representatives of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
Special attention should be paid to numerous museums in Munich: the Munich Glyptothek, which houses one of the best collections of sculptures of the Greek and Roman eras; the Old Pinakothek with the collection of 800 masterpieces of European artists from the Middle Ages until the end of the Rococo period; the New Pinakothek storing 550 canvases and 50 sculptures of the period between Rococo and Art Nouveau; the German Museum and the City Gallery in Lenbachhaus.
In addition, thanks to the famous Oktoberfest – the biggest autumn festival well-known for the variety of beer and sausages, Munich has gained the glory of the beer capital of the world. Today this festival is one of the largest in the world. It is visited by about 6 million people every year.
