About the city
Aachen is one of the oldest cities in Germany. It has long been known for its hot springs and resorts around the world. Aachen is located in the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, near the border with Holland and Belgium.
The city is attractive for tourists due to the large number of attractions, old buildings and entertainments. The main symbol of the city is the Aachen Cathedral, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The cathedral is a magnificent architectural structure striking with the scale and luxury of the design of the halls. The treasury and the marble throne of Charlemagne are preserved here, the sarcophagus with his remains is also in the cathedral. The shrine will be interesting not only due to its magnificent architecture, but also due to its historical value, because the relics stored here are considered to be the most valuable museum exhibits.
Another ancient architectural monument located on the Market Square is the Gothic Town Hall, which was built in the 14th century. Opposite the Town Hall is the Granus Tower, as well as St Mary and St Peter's Church built in the 19th century.
One of the most significant city attractions is Burtscheid Park. It was founded in 1609, when a thermal spring was opened in the picturesque foothill areas. The park reached its heyday at the beginning of the 19th century, many beautiful boulevards and squares were equipped here. In addition to beautiful plants, the historical park is decorated with many ancient fountains complemented by sculptural compositions. Like many years ago, nowadays the resort park is a permanent venue for interesting events.
Today's Aachen is a city with a rich historical past, in which modern buildings and innovative infrastructure harmoniously coexist. The city is proud of the advanced medical centers, research institutions, University of Technology and other notable places, which form the status of Aachen.
