Department of Neurology and Palliative Care in Cologne-Merheim guarantees the care for adult neurological patients. In the Department of Neurology as well as at the Hospital of Palliative Care patients with pain of organic disorders in the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles ar treated.

The Department offers the following main treatment directions:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of strokes (stroke unit)
  • Special neurological intensive medicine (e.g., in case of inflammation of the brain membranes (meninges))
  • Epilepsy
  • Headaches and other pain disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Brain tumors
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Palliative medicine

There are 80 beds in the Department, that offers the in-patient treatment for more than 3 000 patients per year. The neurological first aid station offeres the consultation as well as the preliminary and follow-up patient care.

There are special reception hours available for patients with headaches, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, brain tumors and botulinum toxin (BTX).

The department is equipped with the most modern diagnostic devices. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance therapy provide excellent opportunities for the precise detection of changes and complications in the brain and spinal cord with a low risk degree.

In addition, there is a lot of experience in neurological examinations by electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyography and electroneurogram (ENG and EMG to measure the speed of nerve conduction and muscle activity), all forms of evoked potential (EP) to examine and clarify special functions of the nervous system. Various ultrasound devices, doppler, duplex and transcranial duplex sonography conducted by means of devices of the new generation, allow to examine bloodstream disturbance of the brain by arteries narrowing. The following methods, such as, videooculography and posturography, serve to clarify the vertigo syndromes.

Department of Neurology and Palliative Medicine in Cologne-Merheim offers a full range of liquor (cerebrospinal fluid) diagnostics as well. Neuropsychological diagnostics and its accompanying psychotherapy are intended for the further examination of brain function and psychological aspects of neuroscience.

It is also possible to access the Internet from a PC, smartphone or tablet so that kids always keep in touch with their parents and other family members. There is also a TV in each room.
You can opt for a single or a double room. An accompanying person may stay with the kid in the room. A double room is shared with another patient.
The enhanced comfort rooms are equipped with a safety box, a fridge and upholstered furniture.

The patient and the accompanying person are offered a daily choice of three menus. If you are on a specific diet for any reason, you will be offered an individual menu. Please inform the medical staff about your dietary preferences prior to the treatment.
