About the department
The Department of Gynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Urogynecology, Mammology and Obstetrics at the Hospital Schwabing Munich offers the full range of modern preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with gynecologic diseases of any severity. The department's mammologists provide medical care to women with benign and malignant breast diseases. The priority fields of the department's clinical activities include the treatment of female genital cancers, breast cancer, urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. The department annually provides treatment to more than 2,500 patients, which testifies to the excellent quality of medical care and a high level of patient satisfaction. The department has 4 birthing rooms. The department employs a specially trained team of obstetricians who take care of women during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as provide postpartum care. The department is a Level I Perinatal Center and can boast of its rich experience in care for expectant mothers and women in labor. About 2,300 babies are born in the department every year. The Chief Physician of the department is Dr. med. Olaf Neumann.
The department keeps pace with the development of medicine, and therefore it uses only modern treatments distinguished by high efficiency and minimal traumatization. For example, if a woman requires surgical treatment, the department's specialists use only minimally invasive surgical techniques, which involve the performance of the operation using miniature instruments through several skin incisions up to 1-1.5 cm in size. The minimal invasiveness of such surgical procedures promotes fast postoperative recovery, reduces the risk of complications and the severity of pain. In addition, minimally invasive surgical procedures guarantee excellent aesthetic results.
The focus of the department's gynecologists is on the patients with malignant genital cancers – uterine, cervical, ovarian, endometrial and vulvar cancers. When admitted to the department, the patient with suspected oncology undergoes comprehensive diagnostics, which includes a clinical examination, a full range of laboratory tests, imaging tests and, if required, a biopsy. After receiving the diagnostic results, the department's gynecologists together with oncologists, radiologists, chemotherapists and other specialists study the diagnostic data and elaborate a treatment regimen, which will be most effective for a particular patient. As a rule, the basis of treatment is surgical resection of the malignant tumor. Whenever possible, the department's specialists prefer minimally invasive operations, but in some cases classical open surgery may be more effective. The department's therapeutic options also include adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, antibody therapy and radiation therapy. The therapeutic process necessarily includes competent psychological care, since the diagnostics of cancer often causes an emotional shock. The work of psychologists is aimed at overcoming depressive states and motivating the patient for a favorable treatment outcome.
Mammology deals with the treatment of benign and malignant breast diseases. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of breast cancer. To confirm or exclude breast cancer, the department's specialists conduct comprehensive diagnostics, which includes mammography, ultrasound scanning, MRI, ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy, histological examination and other procedures. If the diagnostic results confirm breast cancer, then mammologists jointly with gynecologists, oncologists, chemotherapists and other specialists develop an individual treatment regimen for the woman. The department's doctors perform both radical surgery to remove breast tumors and breast-conserving interventions. The type of the surgical procedure is mainly determined by the stage of cancer. If the woman is indicated total mastectomy, she will be offered a follow-up aesthetic reconstructive surgery to restore the aesthetic appearance of her breast. The patients also receive psychological care during treatment. The attending physicians devote a sufficient amount of time to communication with their patients, which has a beneficial effect on the entire therapeutic process.
The department's therapeutic options are complemented by both diagnostics and treatment of urogynecologic diseases. The department's medical team provides effective treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, as well as of various types of urinary incontinence. The preference is given to conservative treatment, but the department's specialists also have a perfect command of the modern surgical techniques. The department performs such operations as colposuspension, colporrhaphy, sacroiliac joint fixation, TVT sling procedures and many others.
The department is the Level I Perinatal Center and specializes in providing obstetric services of excellent quality. The advanced medical equipment in the department (4D ultrasound, color Doppler scanning, etc.) allows doctors to monitor the course of pregnancy, timely detecting abnormalities in the development of the fetus or possible health problems in the expectant mother. It should be noted that the department's obstetricians have vast experience in the management of high-risk pregnancies and multiple pregnancies. The department has 4 modern birthing rooms with everything necessary for a successful childbirth, including a bath for water birth. To relieve pain during childbirth, the expectant mothers are offered epidural anesthesia, aromatherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, etc. After delivery, both baby and mother receive appropriate care. The main value of the department's doctors is the safety of the mother and her baby.
