About the department
The Department of Adult and Pediatric Thoracic Surgery at the Acibadem Healthcare Group offers the modern methods of diagnostics and surgical treatment of thoracic diseases. The department admits patients of all age groups, including children. The department's thoracic surgeons are in favor of an interdisciplinary approach, and also maintain close cooperation with specialists in Oncology and Radiology. Most operations are performed using innovative minimally invasive techniques, particularly, video-assisted thoracoscopy. The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Semih Halezeroğlu.
The department is known for outstanding achievements in the treatment of lung cancer. If a tumor is detected at the initial stage, the department's experts perform minimally invasive interventions, namely video-assisted thoracoscopy. When making these manipulations, miniature instruments are used. They are inserted into the thorax through 3 small 2 or 3 cm incisions. A miniature video camera is inserted through one of the incisions, which allows the thoracic surgeon to obtain the images of the thoracic cavity from the inside. Once the tumor has been excised, it is extracted using a special container for removed tissue, without thoracotomy. Such an operation has many advantages, namely the hospitalization period is reduced, the postoperative pain syndrome becomes less severe, small scars and the patient recovers faster.
