        About the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Gaziosmanpasa Hospital of Yeniyuzyil University

        The Department of Thoracic Surgery offers the full range of invasive diagnostics and surgical treatment of diseases and traumatic injuries of the sternum, ribs, lungs, pleura, mediastinal organs, diaphragm and esophagus, with the exception of heart. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Cemal Asım Kutlu.

        A special priority is the surgical treatment of lung cancer and tumors of other thoracic organs. In many cases, sparing minimally invasive operations (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) are performed in order to avoid open-chest surgery. The department's surgeons have long successful clinical experience and rank among the top specialists in the country. 

        The service range of the department includes:

        • Diagnostics and surgical treatment of lung cancer
          • Lobectomy (removal of a part of a lung)
          • Pneumonectomy (total lung removal)
        • Diagnostics and surgical treatment of pleural mesothelioma
          • Removal of fluid from the pleural cavity
          • Removal of the pleura or lung
        • Diagnostics and surgical treatment of esophageal cancer
          • Endoscopic surgery to remove the esophageal tumor (at the early stages)
          • Removal of a part of the esophagus and, at the advanced stages, the upper part of the stomach, including reconstruction of the missing part of the esophagus
