The Department of Neurology at Hannover Medical School under the lead of Prof. Dr. med. Martin Stangel encompasses the full range of treatment of acute and chronic neurological diseases on both outpatient and inpatient basis. Particular emphasis is given to treatment of patients with cerebrovascular diseases, lateral amyotrophic sclerosis and muscle diseases, neuroimmunological diseases, movement disorders and neurological complications after organ transplantation or HCV encephalopathy.

With 10 beds and more than 800 patients with acute strokes annually, the Stroke unit of the Department is the certified superregional center. Within the center, complex treatment is performed, including lysis therapy and, if required, mechanic stent implantation for the reconstruction of affected brain areas (recanalization).

Due to close cooperation with the Institute for diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology, departments of cardiology, angiology and neurosurgery, a complex treatment of patients with the most severe complaints is maintained around the clock. Specialists of the Department are also occupied with research activities primarily in the field of stroke treatment. Thus, the latest scientific findings are immediately integrated into the treatment strategies.
