Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Beerbaum studied medicine at the University of Cologne. There he has also completed an internship in the field of pediatric and adolescent medicine. In 1996, he stopped working at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW in Bad Oeynhausen and continued his education in the field of pediatric cardiology and pediatric intensive care medicine.

Since 2001, he has held the position of Senior Physician of the Working Group on the Cardiovascular System MRI and of an interdisciplinary outpatient clinic specializing in the treatment of adults with congenital heart diseases. Since 2002, he has been setting up a network of competent private health care facilities for the treatment of congenital heart diseases. At the same time, has has conducted several multicenter studies.

In 2007, Prof. Beerbaum was offered the position of a Senior Lecturer at King's College London (England) in the field of pediatric cardiovascular medicine. At the same time, he received clinical experience as a Pediatric Cardiologist at the Evelina Children's Hospital (London), and also acted as the Head of the Cardiac MRI Section for the diagnosis of congenital heart disease.

In 2011, Prof. Beerbaum worked at the University of Nijmegen (the Netherlands) for a short time, and in 2012 he was appointed as the Professor of Pediatric Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Hannover Medical School.

His main research focuses cover all non-invasive imaging methods in the field of congenital heart defects – computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and echocardiography.

Under the direction of Prof. Beerbaum, the Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine (in cooperation with the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery) has become one of the largest centers for the treatment of patients with congenital heart defects of all ages in Germany. Prof. Berbaum is interested not only in providing excellent medical care for the patients of his department, but also in the expansion of activities in the treatment of adults with congenital heart diseases and in the field of prenatal counseling.

The Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine at the Hannover Medical School offers the full range of services in these medical focuses. The department's specialization covers all modern invasive and non-invasive methods of diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases in children. Within the framework of intensive care medicine, treatment of potentially life-threatening urgent clinical situations is provided. The department is the maximum care clinic and the largest pediatric medical institution of its kind in Germany. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Beerbaum.

The competent specialists of the department have a unique experience in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart disease in infants, school-age children, adolescents, and adults with congenital heart diseases. In addition, the department offers effective treatment of pediatric heart diseases, such as myocarditis and endocarditis, cardiomyopathies, acquired heart diseases (for example, mitral or aortic stenosis due to inflammation), heart failure, arterial hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), syncopes, congenital or acquired stenosis of the arteries and veins (for example, in patients with Williams-Beuren syndrome), including the portal vein (for example, stenosis of the portal vein after liver transplantation) and others.

In the field of pediatric intensive care medicine, the focus is on the treatment of children with congenital heart diseases, heart failure, as well as on preparation, monitoring and follow-up care in organ transplantation (heart, lungs, liver and kidneys), childcare after extensive pediatric and neurosurgical interventions, medical care for children suffering from life-threatening diseases, children with traumas after accidents. The medical team of the Intensive Care Medicine Unit (Station 67) works for the benefit of young patients around the clock. The station is equipped with 18 modern, fully equipped beds for artificial ventilation. It should be noted that Station 67 is the largest unit of pediatric intensive care in Germany.

The diagnostic and therapeutic options of the department include:

  • Heart echocardiography, including color Doppler examination, 3D analysis, transesophageal echocardiography, fetal echocardiography (fetal ultrasound in the womb in collaboration with the Department of Gynecology)
  • Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory equipped with techniques for reducing the radiation levels
    • Percutaneous valve implantation (pulmonary valve, Valve-in-Valve technique, pulmonary or tricuspid valve)
    • High-frequency technique for pulmonary valve opening in pulmonary atresia
    • Stenting in patent arterial duct (for example, as part of a hybrid operation in hypoplastic left heart syndrome)
    • Angioplasty (vasodilation with a balloon or stent, for example, lung vessels, coarctation of the aorta, vena cava, lower limb arteries, renal arteries, portal vein)
    • Recanalization (re-opening) of vessels (including mechanical and drug lysis)
    • Balloon dilatation of heart valves (for example, pulmonary artery valve or aortic valve, also in newborns and premature infants (critical heart failure))
    • Atrial septostomy (Rashkind procedure)
    • Perforation and dilatation of the interatrial septum (also with a stent)
    • Closure of shunts or defects in the heart or between vessels with the use of spirals
    • Electrical and pharmacological cardioversion
    • Implantation of permanent catheters (for example, Broviac, Hickman catheters)
    • Interventions on the bronchi (in collaboration with the Department of Pediatric Pulmonology)
    • Catheter examination of the right and left heart (including transseptal punctures)
    • Electrophysiological studies
    • Myocardial biopsy
    • Other diagnostic and therapeutic services
  • Cardiac surgery with the use of advanced cardiac technology (all surgical interventions for the treatment of congenital heart diseases, including the very latest valve replacement procedures, neonatal surgery, surgical treatment of adults with congenital heart diseases)
  • Medical diagnostics of person’s physical abilities (spiroergometry on a treadmill or bicycle)
  • Diagnosis to detect heart rhythm disorders (ECG, long-term ECG, exercise ECG, event recorder)
  • Diagnostic blood pressure testing (24-hour blood pressure monitoring)
  • Pulmonary function testing (in collaboration with the Department of Pediatric Pulmonology)
  • Implantation of all classical pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)
  • Computed tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Various methods to replace or improve the function of the heart, lungs (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), "Berlin heart", ventricular assist device (VAD)
  • Other diagnostic and therapeutic methods
