Nach seiner Schul- und Studienzeit im Heimatland Indien nahm er seine ersten Tätig­keiten am Herzzentrum Leipzig und am HELIOS Park-Klinikum Leipzig auf. Von 2005 bis 2007 führte ihn der Weg nach Toronto, Kanada, wo er das Fellowship Pro­gramm für Kardioanästhesie und Intensivmedizin (inkl. Organtransplantation) am dortigen General Hospital und an der Universität Toronto absolvierte. Auf den Aufenthalt in Kanada folgte eine erneute Tätigkeit für das Herzzentrum Leipzig und 2013 seine erfolgreiche Dissertation. 

Seit Mai 2015 ist Dr. Mukherjee der Chefarzt für Anästhesiologie und damit fester Bestandteil des Ärzteteams der HELIOS Klinik für Herzchirurgie Karlsruhe.

Sein Interesse gilt vor allem der Echokardiografie, insbesondere der Real-Time 3D TEE, den Neuerungen bei perkutanen Klappenimplantationen und der Bildgebung in der minimal-invasiven Herzchirurgie.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of Cardiac Surgery Clinic (Kilinik fur Herzchirurgie Karlsruhe GmbH), headed by Michael Schwerdt, conducts patient monitoring during the surgery and in the postoperative period. The main task of the Department is to monitor the basic vital functions of the patient during surgery. Additionally, the Department provides highly specialized care to patients in the intensive medical unit. Functions of the Department are to make a preparatory examination of the patient for the possible risk assessment, selection of a suitable method of anesthesia and its implementation, monitoring and stabilization of the important functions of the body during and after surgery, neuromonitoring , pain therapy, blood transfusions, monitoring of patients in the early postoperative period, as well as providing artificial respiration for patients in critical health condition. For these purposes, a continuous supervision of patients by anesthesiologists and emergency pgysicians in the intensive care unit as well as 24/7 emergency assistance services are provided in the clinic.
