About the department

The Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Hirslanden Clinic Permanence Bern offers the full range of medical services for patients with diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. The area of competence includes effective medical care for diseases and injuries of the shoulder, elbow, knee, hip, wrist joints, pathological lesions of the hand, foot and spine. Depending on the complexity of the clinical case, the treatment can be inpatient or outpatient. The department provides all modern conservative and surgical treatment methods, including postoperative physiotherapy. The Chief Physician of the department is Dr. med. Thomas-Oliver Schneider.

Of particular interest to the department’s doctors is knee and hip endoprosthetics. In most cases, such operations are minimally invasive. Also, when performing operations, the surgeons use computerized navigation systems and robot-assisted techniques to ensure the best possible accuracy, which is especially important when implanting the prosthesis. To replace the joint, only high-quality prostheses with a long service life are used. It is worth noting that the medical facility is the only one in Bern that offers an effective Rapid Recovery concept for postoperative recovery. The program is intended not only to improve the functionality of the prosthesis (the patient can go already on the day of surgery with a full load on the joint), but also to prevent the development of complications or infection.

In addition, conservative treatment methods, for example, gypsum dressings, walking aids, orthopedic shoes, etc., are actively used in clinical practice.
