About the department

The Department of General and Abdominal Surgery at the Hirslanden Salem-Spital Bern offers the full range of modern surgical interventions in the fields of its competence. In addition to operations on the abdominal organs, the department's doctors specialize in surgical interventions on the thyroid gland, esophagus and soft tissues. The Chief Physician of the department is Dr. med. Andreas Glättli.

Most operations are performed using minimally invasive and robot-assisted techniques (da Vinci surgical system), which today are the gold standard in surgery. Such operations ensure rapid recovery, minimize the risks of postoperative complications and exclude massive blood loss. The health and comfort of the patient is a priority for all health workers in the department.

Prior to the operation, the specialists carefully study the results of the patient's examinations and determine the relative and absolute indications for the operation. Before the intervention, the patient is individually consulted. During the consultation, he will receive information about the upcoming treatment, and can also ask any questions of interest.

After the operation, the patient will be under the strict monitoring of specially trained nursing staff. The attending physician will also personally monitor the patient's condition. In the case of severe pain, the specialized doctors will select the necessary drugs for alleviation of pain.
