Location
Located on the banks of the Neckar River, in the northwest of Baden-Württemberg, Heidelberg is the largest city in Germany, as well as the oldest university city in the country. Since Heidelberg was not damaged by bombing during the Second World War, the old part of the city has retained its original appearance. Walking along the narrow streets and cozy alleys of this amazing city, one involuntarily plunges into its glorious historical past. In 2004, Heidelberg's old city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The most famous and impressive sight of the city is Heidelberg Castle, which rises majestically on the banks of the Neckar River. The construction of the historical monument dates back to the 14th - 17th centuries. The architectural style of the castle is a mix of several styles – Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance. The castle is surrounded by a large beautiful garden, which houses a monument to the great German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, as well as a Pharmacy Museum. The basement of Heidelberg Castle houses the world's largest wine barrel with a capacity of about 220,000 liters. This barrel is over 200 years old.
Hauptstrasse is also a must-see on the tourist route. With a length of 1.8 km, it is the longest pedestrian street in all of Germany. The Hauptstrasse offers many attractions, including small souvenir shops, boutiques, bars, cafes and gourmet restaurants with excellent traditional cuisine. This street also houses the city hall, university buildings and several beautiful churches.
Those who want to enjoy the stunning views of the city from a high point should go to the Philosophers' Walk. One can see citrus trees, bamboo and ginkgo trees along the paths, which are quite rare for Germany. When walking here, the guests of the city also have the opportunity to see an engraving depicting Heidelberg in 1620.
Heidelberg is a rather green city, so there are many opportunities for outdoor recreation. In the old city, green areas smoothly turn into city quarters and vice versa. The large green area at the river called Neckarwiese is especially popular. Both residents and guests of the city enjoy barbecuing here, playing the guitar and simply enjoying the picturesque natural landscapes.
