About the department
The Department of Otolaryngology at the Otolaryngology Clinic Dr. Jörg Heppelmann Bonn offers the full range of medical services in its field of competence. The department performs high-precision diagnostics and effective treatment of ENT diseases. Of particular interest to the department's team of doctors is providing medical care to patients with nasal and paranasal sinus diseases, hearing impairment, tinnitus, dizziness, and obstructive sleep apnea. At the diagnostic stage, the attending physician conducts a clinical examination, listens to the patient's complaints, and, if necessary, performs endoscopic examinations, hardware diagnostics, and other procedures. The department is equipped with an advanced computed tomography scanner with the ability to perform 3D CT scans of the paranasal sinuses and middle ear. This is the only medical facility in the city of Bonn that offers such an imaging test. With diagnostic data in hand, the specialist discusses possible treatment options with the patient. Whenever possible, drug treatment becomes the first choice, and endoscopic therapeutic procedures are prescribed as a second-line treatment. ENT surgery is performed in the state-of-the-art operating rooms of partner clinics, in particular at the University Hospital Bonn, the University Hospital Duesseldorf, and the Beta Clinic Bonn.
The department is headed by Dr. med. Jörg Heppelmann. He is a highly qualified specialist with more than 35 years of excellent clinical practice. The doctor has excellent qualifications in the treatment of ENT diseases and has additional qualifications in the field of plastic aesthetic surgery. Dr. Heppelmann is a Member of the German Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (DGHNO-KHC) and also successfully runs his own otolaryngology private practice, founded in 2009.
The department admits many patients suffering from nasal and paranasal sinus diseases. The specialists most often treat sinusitis (especially complex forms), rhinitis, frontal sinusitis, sphenoiditis, nasal and paranasal sinus cysts and polyps, and post-traumatic nasal pathologies (for example, deviated nasal septum). If the above pathologies are suspected, the main diagnostic methods are rhinoscopy (examination of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx using mirrors), nasal endoscopy, and computed tomography, including 3D CT scans of the paranasal sinuses. A treatment regimen is developed individually depending on the diagnosis and features of the clinical case. The first-line treatment is drug therapy: patients are prescribed antibiotics, antihistamines, and vitamin supplements, as well as nasal rinsing with antiseptic solutions. Patients with sinusitis may sometimes need a maxillary sinus puncture. In more complex cases, the department’s doctors choose endoscopic treatment: the surgeon sees the surgical field on a monitor at multiple zooms and uses an endoscope to perform the necessary manipulations. The procedure is performed without external incisions through an endonasal approach, which ensures minimal trauma to healthy tissue. The last-line treatment is surgery. Surgical procedures on the nose and paranasal sinuses are performed on an inpatient basis at the Beta Clinic Bonn. Typically, the patient is hospitalized for only one day. During the operations, nasal tamponades are not performed, so the patient does not experience any discomfort after surgery.
The department also offers its patients cosmetic plastic surgery to reshape the nose (rhinoplasty). Surgical procedures in this range are performed in the operating rooms of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Beta Clinic Bonn.
The department's ENT physicians also have extensive experience in the treatment of tinnitus. This disease is characterized by the appearance of ringing or noise in the ears when there is no external acoustic stimulus. Tinnitus is not an independent disease but a manifestation of another pathology or a consequence of prolonged exposure to loud sounds. It is often the case that tinnitus occurs against the background of ear injuries, inflammatory middle ear diseases, degenerative changes in the ear, otosclerosis, ear wax plugs, arterial hypertension, heart diseases, or vascular conditions. During the diagnosis of tinnitus, the department's doctors perform otoscopy, tympanometry, audiometry, and computed tomography. A complete blood count and a blood biochemistry test are often performed to exclude heart pathologies, thyroid diseases, and other conditions that may be the cause of tinnitus. Treatment tactics depend on the etiology of tinnitus. In most cases, the department’s specialists use only drug therapy using anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, antihistamines, antihypertensive drugs, etc. The treatment regimen must include sedatives, antidepressants, herbal teas, and light self-massage of the ears. Surgery for tinnitus may be required only in cases where the cause of tinnitus is a benign or malignant tumor, otosclerosis, Meniere's disease, or other pathology that is not amenable to conservative therapy.
The department's main clinical activities include:
- Diagnostics and treatment of nasal and paranasal sinus diseases
- Diagnostics and treatment of hearing loss
- Diagnostics and treatment of tinnitus
- Diagnostics and treatment of dizziness
- Diagnostics and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea
- Diagnosis and treatment of other ENT diseases
