Location

Lausanne is a picturesque city in the French-speaking Swiss canton of Vaud on the shores of Lake Geneva. The city is known for hosting the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee and many other sports organizations. Also, the city constantly hosts major international events – all kinds of congresses, conferences and exhibitions.

An indelible impression on the guests of Lausanne makes untouched nature – the Alps densely covered with forests and the beautiful Lake Geneva, which is the largest and most beautiful lake in Central Europe. On the shore of the lake is a wonderful resort area with beaches, a park and entertainment venues. A walk along the lake will be interesting at any time of the year. The lake has a wonderful promenade, while pleasure boats ply the lake in the warm season.

Nevertheless, Lausanne can surprise not only with amazing landscapes, but also with interesting sights. It is here that about 45 monuments of Swiss national importance are located. The city is conditionally divided into the old and the new city. Its historical center is located in the territory closed to cars, which allows to experience the atmosphere of bygone days. All the historical values of Lausanne are concentrated in its old part, on the Cité Hill, near which the palace of the Russian Count Rumine is located. The palace was built in the style of the Florentine Renaissance at the end of the 19th century at the expense of the Russian family Bestuzhev-Rumine. Nowadays, the building of the palace houses the cantonal and university libraries, as well as several museums, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Archeology and History, the Museum of Geology and others.

One of the most amazing sights of the city is the Cathedral of Notre Dame of Lausanne. This is the largest gothic church in the country. The cathedral is famous for its beautiful decoration, which includes murals, statues, wooden choirs and a huge ancient organ. Not far from this iconic monument is the Church of St. Francis. It repeatedly experienced fires and reconstruction.

Other iconic places of Lausanne that should be definitely visited are the medieval quarter of Ville Marché. The tourists are most impressed by the old houses, winding streets and elaborate lampposts. The Olympic Museum is also popular among the city guests.

Lausanne also offers original modern architectural monuments, such as the Sauvabelin Tower. It was built in 2003 and is located in the park of the same name. This original building has an exclusively decorative function. It is completely built of wood, but the roof of the tower is made of copper. At the top of the tower one can find the highest observation deck in the city, which can be reached via a spiral staircase.

Not far from Lausanne is the world famous Crans-Montana ski resort. The resort is located at an altitude of 1,500 meters in the heart of the Swiss Alps. In this wonderful sunny region one can enjoy beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, the Rhone and Dan Blanche valleys. In the warm season, golf is especially popular here.
