About the department
The Department of Oncology at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center provides the most advanced treatment for all types of cancer and conditions related to it. The chief physician of the Department is Prof. Ido Wolf, whose primary interests include gastrointestinal malignancies, neuroendocrine tumors and endocrine aspects of cancer. The fast-track appointment service enables patients to have their initial visit within 48 hours after contacting the Department. The specialists of the Department also conduct progressive research covering a broad range of medical disciplines and cancer treatments.
The Sourasky Medical Center starts cancer treatment with a comprehensive diagnosis and a multidisciplinary discussion involving the participation of all necessary medical specialists to develop the most suitable individualized treatment plan for each patient. The Department of Oncology, headed by Prof. Ido Wolf, offers cutting-edge immunotherapy, which is the future of cancer care. Many patients participate in clinical research studies for progressive treatments, such as Keytruda and Opdivo, when medicine has exhausted all other alternatives. Due to the substantial cash injections in immunotherapy, the Department of Oncology at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center is Israel’s only cancer center to test whether patients are suitable for immunotherapy treatment. In addition, the Sourasky Medical Center has a unique partnership with Roche Pharmaceuticals, which offers FoundationOne (genetic testing for patients’ sensitivity to a range of treatments and medications). The test provides the most extensive, reliable and precise information available on cancer cell genetic profiles.
Apart from that, the Department of Oncology at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center has a special call center for patients to receive support, instruction and answers to questions they have regarding inconsistent pain and treatment side effects, such as nausea and vomiting.
The Department of Oncology, led by Prof. Ido Wolf, treats patients with the following oncologic conditions:
- Breast cancer
- Gastrointestinal cancer
- Bone and soft tissue sarcomas
- Lung cancer
- Melanoma and other skin tumors
- Urogenital tumors
- Gynecological cancers
- Thyroid cancer
- Tumors of the brain and nervous system
To treat the above-mentioned cancers, the Department at the Sourasky Medical Center has separate units, such as Breast Cancer Unit, Gynecologic Oncology Unit, Lung Cancer and Sarcoma Unit etc.
Furthermore, the medical team under the direction of Prof. Ido Wolf supports patients and their family members psychologically, since cancer diagnosis is mostly shocking and frightening.
