About the department
The Department of Neuropediatrics at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden offers the full range of diagnostics and treatment of acute and chronic neurological disorders in children and adolescents. Doctors have state-of-the-art medical equipment and effective treatment methods to achieve optimal treatment results. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Maja von der Hagen.
The department's clinical activities are mainly focused on the treatment of inflammatory and metabolic diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, neuromuscular diseases, epilepsy, neoplasms of the central and peripheral nervous system, congenital pathological syndromes, as well as on the diagnostics of developmental delays, including especially complex forms. Many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. To cure neurological diseases in children, the department's specialists use highly effective drug therapy regimens that are adapted to the individual needs of the child.
The department has a modern EEG laboratory. The specialists carry out various EEG tests (for example, sleep EEG, long-term EEG, sleep-deprived EEG), as well as additional tests, such as recording evoked potentials and determining nerve conduction velocity. Should surgical treatment be required, the department's specialists cooperate closely with the Department of Neurosurgery. The treatment of chronic neurological disorders is carried out in cooperation with the Social Pediatric Center.
The department's therapeutic options include drug therapy regimens that have been developed over the years. They help to alleviate or completely eliminate the symptoms of neurological pathology and return the child to a full life. The department's doctors quite often resort to injection therapy with botulinum toxin, for example, in infantile cerebral palsy.
