About the Department of Pediatric Nephrology at Charite University Hospital Berlin
The Department of Pediatric Nephrology at the Charite University Hospital Berlin offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for young patients with diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract. The department treats infants, children, and adolescents up to 18 years of age. It has comfortable ultrasound diagnostic rooms and provides extensive laboratory testing to diagnose renal and urinary system disorders. Treatment includes pharmacotherapy, dietary therapy, renal replacement therapy, and specialized blood purification procedures (apheresis). Specialists perform all types of dialysis for children with acute and chronic renal failure. An important focus is preparing children for kidney transplantation and providing comprehensive post-transplant care. Medical care is provided in close cooperation with the departments of pediatric urology and pediatric surgery, which is especially important when treating congenital malformations of the kidneys and urinary tract. Patients can receive care on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. The physicians are highly qualified and have specialized expertise to achieve optimal outcomes even in particularly complex cases. The Head Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Dominik Müller.
The department's team of physicians specializes in treating the full spectrum of kidney and urinary tract diseases in children. Pediatric nephrologists focus on young patients with acute and chronic renal failure. They also provide consultations for children with microhematuria, proteinuria, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and recurrent urinary tract infections. The department's specialists work closely with pediatric surgeons and urologists to provide comprehensive treatment for urinary tract malformations: vesicoureteral reflux, ureteral stenosis, urethral valves, and other conditions.
At the beginning of treatment, physicians conduct a clinical examination of the child, after which they prescribe the necessary diagnostic tests. The standard protocol includes comprehensive blood and urine tests and kidney ultrasound. When hematuria, proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome, renal failure, or certain other kidney diseases are suspected, a biopsy may be indicated – a procedure to collect kidney tissue for histological examination. In some cases, MRI and/or CT scans are performed to establish a definitive diagnosis.
The department's specialists have all modern methods of conservative treatment for nephrological diseases in children at their disposal. In most cases, comprehensive drug therapy using various groups of medications is sufficient: angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, diuretics, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and antibiotics. For chronic renal failure, nephrotic syndrome, and glomerulonephritis, drug treatment is supplemented with a special diet.
A special area of expertise for the physicians at this medical facility is the provision of dialysis (renal replacement therapy) for children with acute and chronic renal failure. The department's modern dialysis unit offers hemodialysis, hemofiltration, and peritoneal dialysis. It also has the necessary equipment for advanced blood purification procedures – plasmapheresis and immunosorption. The department has special rooms for dialysis in young patients with infectious diseases: for example, hepatitis B and C, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
