About the Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiotherapy at Charite University Hospital Berlin

According to the Focus magazine, the Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiotherapy at the Charite University Hospital Berlin ranks among the top German medical facilities in the area of its specialization!

The department offers all types of modern radiation therapy for the treatment of benign and malignant tumors. The department has state-of-the-art equipment, namely 8 powerful linear accelerators, 2 brachytherapy devices, X-ray systems, devices for intraoperative radiation therapy and proton therapy. In addition, the department has an innovative CyberKnife radiosurgery system, which allows doctors to effectively treat tumors of various localization, including benign ones. Medical and technical resources combined with the high professionalism of doctors allow guaranteeing top-class medical care corresponding to international standards. The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Volker Budach.

The department successfully uses the advanced CyberKnife radiosurgery system in its clinical practice. This technology is available only in leading medical centers in developed countries. The main advantage of CyberKnife therapy is that the device allows focusing high doses of radiation with millimeter precision. This ensures that cancer cells are effectively destroyed without damaging adjacent healthy tissue. The capabilities of the CyberKnife system allow affecting small and large tumors of almost any localization, including tumors of the brain, head and neck, spine, chest, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys and prostate, which makes it unique and especially effective in the fight against cancer. As a rule, one radiation session is enough for a patient (in rare cases, the radiation dose can be divided into 3-5 procedures). The radiation with the CyberKnife system is performed on an outpatient basis, so the patient can return to his usual way of life as soon as possible. In addition, the therapeutic procedure is absolutely painless and safe, therefore it is an excellent alternative to open surgery and conventional fractionated radiation therapy.

The department's medical team also specializes in such modern types of radiation as image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), intraoperative radiation therapy, tomotherapy and others. All types of radiation therapy are highly effective, since they allow focusing the maximum dose of radiation on the pathological focus, while not damaging healthy tissues. In the course of treatment, the doctors of the department strictly follow the current clinical protocols and observe the radiation protection standards, which minimizes complications and risks for the patient.
