About the department

The Department of Gynecology, Mammology and Obstetrics at the University Hospital Greifswald offers the full range of medical services in these medical fields. The department’s areas of specialization include the diagnostics and treatment of all diseases of the female reproductive system, including the oncological ones, the treatment of cancer and benign breast pathologies, urinary incontinence. In the field of obstetrics, the individual pregnancy management, safe delivery and quality postnatal care are provided. The department regularly demonstrates high rates of treatment success, which is facilitated by the use of innovative technologies and modern treatment methods. The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Marek Zygmunt.

The department is certified as the German Center of Clinical Excellence in the treatment of genital sarcomas and mixed tumors. Also, the quality of medical care in the treatment of breast diseases, in particular breast cancer, is certified by DIN EN ISO 9001: 2008, German Society of Senology and German Cancer Society.

In the treatment of female genital oncopathology, the department's specialists closely cooperate with the doctors of all related fields (radiologists, oncologists, specialists in the field of nuclear medicine and others). Each clinical case is considered during regular tumor boards, after which the doctors jointly develop the optimal treatment strategy. Should surgical treatment be required, the preference is always given to sparing minimally invasive interventions (if clinical indications allow for this type of operation). In the case of radical breast tumor removal, when it is impossible to perform a breast-conserving surgery, the patients are offered reconstructive procedures, which allow them to restore the aesthetic appearance of the breast and thereby to restore the woman’s self-confidence. An integral part of cancer therapy is the psycho-oncological support, which allows the patient to accept the diagnosis and set her mind on a positive treatment outcome.

The department provides the first-class prenatal and postpartum care, as well as safe delivery. It delivers more than 1,200 babies every year, so the department's obstetricians have vast experience and do everything possible to carry out the childbirth without any problems or complications. The delivery rooms are equipped with everything necessary for the successful childbirth and meet the standards of modern obstetrics.
