The Department of Adult and Pediatric Orthopedics, Orthopedic Surgery at the University Hospital Greifswald offers the full range of surgical and conservative orthopedics and orthopedic surgical procedures. The department specializes in the treatment of diseases of the spine, hip, knee and shoulder joint replacement surgery and foot surgery. Special attention is paid to pediatric orthopedics. Other department’s activities include the surgical treatment of chronic polyarthritis, bone tumors. In collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics, there is provided an optimal treatment of injuries and orthopedic diseases in children and adolescents. Another priority is spinal surgery. The department offers the full range of options, ranging from minimally invasive interventions using a surgical microscope to spinal fusion for scoliosis and total vertebral replacement (prosthetics).

The department has in its arsenal the very latest capabilities of surgical orthopedics. In case of defects in the articular surface of large joints, modern methods of bone and cartilage, cartilage cell transplantation are used. Wassilew made a significant contribution to the development of surgical treatments for hip dysplasia.

Curriculum vitae

From 2000 to 2007 Prof. Dr. Georgi Wassilew studied Medicine at the Medical University Charité in Berlin. In 2006, he defended his thesis at the Medical University Charité in Berlin, while in 2015 he underwent habilitation. The Professor is an expert in endoprosthetics and surgery with accelerated rehabilitation, minimally invasive interventions on knee and hip prostheses, revision interventions on knee and hip prostheses with pronounced musculoskeletal defects. In addition, he also specializes in the treatment of bacterial infections of artificial joints, as well as in the surgical treatment of hip dysplasia using a special technique, in the development of which he was actively involved.
