About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The chief physician of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf is Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Henning Hanken, specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The main focuses of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf are surgery of benign and malignant tumors of facial skin, salivary glands, the entire oral cavity and skull base. In case of malignancies, there is developed an individual treatment program with due consideration of stages of the disease, possible comorbidities and patient’s wishes.

The specialists of the Department under the direction of Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Henning Hanken at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf use the latest intraoperative devices, such as navigation systems or three-dimensional imaging for tumor surgery. It is done for the operation to be as successful as possible and for the patient to feel as safety as possible. The tissue defects caused by operative therapy can often be eliminated during the same operation by means of microsurgical implants and thus both form and function are restored.

Another priority focus of the Department at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf is treatment of facial bones and facial soft tissues. Therefore, the Department has state-of-the-art osteosynthesis systems, including pre-prepared three-dimensional titanium plates and grates. While the patient is under anesthesia, the surgery result is checked by three-dimensional X-ray photography in order to avoid a necessity for the further correction.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery under the direction of Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Henning Hanken provides medical care to 2,500 inpatients and 15,000 outpatients. The Department is the largest specialized University Hospital of this kind in Germany and Europe.
