The Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Poisoning is a part of the Center of Internal Medicine at the Heidelberg University Hospital. The chief physician of the Department is Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Stremmel. The range of medical services includes key fields of functional diagnosis – endoscopy and sonography, inpatient treatment (in both general and private intensive care units), outpatient treatment as well as oncology and transplantation medicine.

As for the field of oncology, the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Poisoning maintains a close cooperation with the National Cancer Center Heidelberg (NCT).

The outpatient unit of oncology provides treatment to the patients with the diseases of the following organs:

  • Esophagus
  • Stomach
  • Colon (colorectal carcinoma)
  • Liver
  • Gallbladder and bile ducts
  • Pancreas
  • Neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas

Moreover, the Department often provides care to the patients with rare oncological diseases, such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST).

The treatment of the patients after the liver transplant in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Poisoning under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Stremmel is integrated into the Interdisciplinary Transplant Center Heidelberg. The multidisciplinary team of doctors supervises the patients in various units (outpatient units, stations). The treatment of the patients with the liver transplant consists of a preparation before the liver transplant, inpatient treatment after the surgery as well as medical care after the surgery on the outpatient basis.

  • sonography of the chest and abdomen
