The Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Jena covers the entire spectrum of surgical and conservative ophthalmology. The main focuses of the department include diagnosis and treatment of cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachment and vascular occlusions. There are annually treated about 3,000 inpatients and more than 20,000 outpatients. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Daniel Meller. 

To provide surgical treatment of cataract, the department offers various treatments, such as intracapsular/extracapsular cataract extraction and phacoemulsification.
