The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital Münster offers all treatment options in the field of cardiothoracic surgery as well as heart and lung transplant. In cooperation with the specialists of other departments and sections at the University Hospital Münster as well as external experts, physicians treat children and adults with congenital heart defects. The Department is headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Sven Martens.

The patient care is provided in an interdisciplinary collaboration with the Department of Child’s and Adolescent Pediatric Cardiology and with the Department of Cardiology and Angiology. Annually the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University Hospital Münster performs about 3,000 surgical interventions, while 200 of them are carried out with the use of a cardiopulmonary bypass. The Department under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Sven Martens has 46 inpatient beds in two centers. The intensive care of patients is provided together with the Department of Anesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine in the Intensive Care Unit of the Cardiology Center. 

The Section of Cardiac Surgery offers all surgical cardiac treatments that meet the latest standards. The preliminary diagnosis is carried out in a close cooperation with the colleagues in cardiology within the University Hospital Münster and outside it. The doctors of the Department place special emphasis on brain protection during the heart surgery. The main focuses include surgical treatment of valvular heart diseases, coronary artery bypass surgery as well as surgery for heart failure and up to a heart transplant. The medical team under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Sven Martens has the best practices in heart support systems (ECLS, LVAD). There are regularly performed operations on the main aorta (in case of aneurysm and dissection) as well as installations of pacemakers and defibrillators. 

The Section of Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation at the University Hospital Münster provides surgical treatment of diseases of the lungs, chest, mediastinum and diaphragm. The Section covers the entire spectrum of thoracic surgery in both children and adults, including supportive techniques and lung transplant. It also specializes in cancer thoracic surgery and is part of the Lung Center and the certified interdisciplinary Comprehensive Cancer Center Münster.
