According to the Focus magazine, the Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital Oldenburg ranks among the top German medical facilities specializing in the treatment of heart diseases!
The department offers the full range of medical services for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The department has 59 beds and 6 beds in the Intensive Care Unit. In addition, the ultramodern equipment of the department deserves special attention. This includes 2 Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, 3 EchoCG Laboratories, devices for diagnostics of vascular diseases, MRI, telemetry system, etc. The department annually treats more than 5,000 patients, which makes it one of the largest and most reputable in Germany. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Albrecht Elsässer, who ranks among the best cardiologists in the country (according to the Focus magazine).
The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories serve not only for the diagnostics, but also for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. For example, the treatment of coronary artery stenosis using balloon dilatation is carried out here. Also, the catheters are used in coronary artery stent implantation and bypass grafting.
The electrophysiological examinations, catheter ablation, implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators are also performed here. The specially equipped Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory offer high-precision systems for the detection of arrhythmogenic foci and the treatment of arrhythmias, for example, the 3D mapping system CARTO.
The patients with atrial fibrillation can be treated using the very latest catheter ablation technique complemented by the classical methods of electrical cardioversion and drug therapy (with indications, with the use of continuous ECG monitoring).

Curriculum vitae
Since 2008, Prof. Albrecht Elsässer has been the Head of the Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital Oldenburg. Prior to this appointment, the doctor held the positions at the University Hospital Freiburg, at the Kerckhoff Klinik and at the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim. The doctor received his medical education at the Гniversities of Heidelberg and Mainz.
His clinical focuses include the interventional treatment of vascular lesions and structural heart diseases (heart valves), as well as the treatment of other cardiovascular diseases, such as acute coronary syndrome and heart failure. His research activities are focused on the study of vascular and myocardial diseases.
Prof. Elsässer is the Board Member of the German Society of Cardiology (DGK), Responsible for Continuing Education Program of the Academy of the German Society of Cardiology (DGK-Akademie), as well as the Representative of the Working Group on Interventional Cardiology (AGIK). He is also a Reviewer at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
