The Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy at the University hospital Saarland Homburg offers treatment of the full range of disorders in this field. The diagnosis and treatment of all mental illnesses in children and adolescents under the age of 18, as well as developmental disorders, is one of the areas of specialization of the department. The Head Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Eva Möhler.
The department provides psychoeducation, individual and group psychotherapy, in some cases – drug treatment, as well as kinesiotherapy, ergotherapy, music therapy and speech therapy classes. The typical diseases treated in the department are organic diseases, including symptomatic mental disorders, mental and behavioral disorders caused by psychotropic substances, schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders, affective disorders, neurotic, stressful and somatoform disorders, etc.
Inpatient treatment is provided in 3 departments: the Department for Adolescents aged from 13 to 18 years, 12 beds, the Department for Children aged 6-12 years, 8 beds, as well as the Department for Children under 5 years of age hospitalized with their parents, 5 beds.
The Day Hospital has 15 beds for children from 4 to 14 years old. There is also the Department of Outpatient Psychiatry, consisting of one general dispensary and four specialized outpatient clinics. The specialized outpatient clinics admit children with attention deficit disorder, autism, urination and defecation disorders (enuresis, encopresis), as well as infants and preschool children. Approximately 5,000 patients undergo outpatient treatment every year.
