About the department

The Department of Hematology, Oncology, Palliative Care, Rheumatology and Infectiology at the University Hospital Ulm offers the full range of services in these fields. It provides the accurate diagnostics and effective treatment of oncological diseases, benign and malignant blood pathologies, rheumatic and infectious diseases. A separate focus of the department is palliative care aimed at relieving pain and improving the quality of life of the terminally ill patients. The doctors of the department have unique clinical skills and rich experience, which contributes to high treatment success rates. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Hartmut Döhner.

The department is part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Ulm, which ranks among the best medical institutions of this kind in Germany certified by the German Cancer Society and the German Cancer Aid (Deutsche Krebshilfe). Each clinical case is considered on a regular interdisciplinary tumor boards, after which an individual treatment strategy is developed taking into account all the diagnostic results, disease stage, general patient's health, age, etc. All the treatment concepts comply with current national and international standards. When treating cancer, doctors mostly use conventional chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy with antibodies, as well as innovative forms of therapy, for example, the use of mitosis and signaling pathway inhibitors.
