Operative microneurosurgical treatment and researches are focused on neuro-oncology, skull base surgery, vascular neurosurgery, spine diseases, intraoperative monitoring and neuronavigation.

The Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Würzburg treats patients with all diseases of the brain, spinal cord, spine and peripheral nerves. There are treated adults, infants and children. An experienced medical team of the Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Ralf-Ingo Ernestus annually provides diagnosis and counseling to over 5,600 patients.

Five state-of-the-art operating rooms at the University Hospital of Würzburg are used for surgery in patients with cerebral hemorrhage, tumors of the brain, spinal cord and brain injuries. Surgery is performed in correspondence with all the latest principles. In addition to minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques, there are also used neurosurgical techniques, such as brainstem stimulation, hearing implants, neurostimulation for Parkinson’s disease, tremor and dystonia, as well as nerve transplantation. There are also used all modern intraoperative imaging and navigation methods. The Sections of Neurotraumatology and Neurosurgical Intensive Care Medicine at the Department of Neurosurgery are ready to provide medical care day and night.

The Department of Neurosurgery under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Ralf-Ingo Ernestus maintains intensive cooperation with the Section of Neuroradiology, while providing combined interventional and surgical medical care upon vascular abnormalities. To provide an optimal treatment, the Department cooperates with the Departments of Neurology, Otolaryngology, Maxillofacial Surgery, Radiation Therapy and Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Würzburg.
