About the department

The Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Congenital Heart Defect Surgery at the German Heart Center Munich offers the full range of surgical treatment for congenital heart defects in newborns, young children and adults. Today, the department is proud of its 45 years of clinical experience in the field of its specialization and has a reputation as one of the leading medical facilities of this kind in Germany. The department's surgeons perform more than 600 interventions on the cardiovascular system annually. Each clinical case of a young patient is considered at the regular medical boards, during which the optimal treatment strategy is determined. In addition, the department is one of the few in Germany, which operates on the basis of its own chair at the university. Thus, it has access to the very latest research results and the best training of medical students. The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Hörer.

The treatment is based on the comprehensive approach, so if necessary, the specialists in pediatric cardiology, anesthesiology, radiology, nuclear and laboratory medicine can be involved throughout the entire therapeutic process. The preoperative diagnostics is carried out in the Department for Congenital Heart Defects and Pediatric Cardiology. The department provides medical care round-the-clock.

Due to the unique competence of doctors, even congenital heart defects can be operated using minimally invasive techniques. Most often, such techniques are successfully used for the correction of atrial septal defect and venous sinus defect. The interdisciplinary cooperation, for example, with the Mother and Child Center at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich, the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Red Cross Hospital in Munich, allows for the detection and treatment of cardiac pathologies in the fetus even at the stage of pregnancy, as well as immediately after birth in the case of detection of heart disease in the womb.

The department's surgeons have a number of modern surgical techniques, which allow to achieve excellent results even in particularly complex clinical cases. Some operations are carried out using a heart-lung machine without any additional blood donation, which was impossible several years ago. The autologous blood preoperative donation is successfully used in patients over the age of 15 years and is becoming more and more widespread in young children. This procedure is especially important in adults with congenital heart diseases. During the surgical intervention, the special equipment is used in the operating room in order to collect the patient’s own blood. The blood is later washed in a centrifuge and re-infused into the patient.

Since July 2011, the department has been a certified supra-regional Center for Congenital Heart Defects in Adults (certificate of the German Society of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Research, the German Society of Pediatric Cardiology and the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery).

The service range of the department includes:

  • Surgical correction of anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery
  • Surgical treatment of aortic insufficiency
  • Surgical correction of aortic stenosis
  • Surgical treatment of aortic coarctation
  • Tetralogy of Fallot surgery
