About the department

The Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Congenital Heart Defect Surgery at the German Heart Center Munich offers the full range of surgical treatment for congenital heart defects in newborns, young children, and adolescents. The medical facility also admits adult patients with congenital heart defects (EMAH certificate). The department has been dealing with the repair of heart defects in young patients for more than 45 years, and therefore the medical facility is deservedly proud of its extensive and successful clinical experience in its areas of specialization. The department enjoys a reputation as one of the leading medical facilities of this kind in Germany, so patients from all over the world regularly come here. Pediatric cardiac surgeons annually perform more than 600 cardiovascular interventions. Each clinical case is considered at a regular board meeting, during which the optimal treatment tactics are determined. It is worth noting that the department is one of the few in Germany that operates on the basis of its own department at the university, which provides access to the very latest research results and the best training for medical students. The Head Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Hörer.

The treatment is based on a comprehensive approach, and therefore, if necessary, specialists in pediatric cardiology, anesthesiology, radiology, nuclear medicine, and laboratory medicine can be involved in the therapeutic process. At the stage of preoperative diagnostics, a child undergoes all the necessary tests to assess the function of their heart and the state of its anatomical structures, including electrocardiography, echocardiography, ultrasound scans, imaging tests, general clinical and biochemical tests, etc. Based on the results of comprehensive diagnostics, an optimal treatment strategy is determined.

Thanks to the unique competence of doctors, congenital heart defects can be repaired using minimally invasive techniques. Such techniques are most often successfully used to repair an atrial septal defect, a sinus venosus atrial septal defect, and congenital aortic valve defects. Interdisciplinary cooperation, for example, with the Mother and Child Medical Center at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich and the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Red Cross Hospital Munich, allows doctors to detect and treat cardiac pathologies in a fetus even at the stage of pregnancy, as well as immediately after childbirth in the case of the detection of heart disease in the womb.

The department's surgeons have a variety of modern surgical techniques that allow them to achieve excellent results even in complex clinical cases. Some surgical interventions can be performed using a heart-lung machine without any donor blood transfusions, which was impossible a few years ago. Preoperative autologous blood transfusions have been used successfully in patients over 15 years old and are increasingly being used in young children. These procedures play a particularly important role for adults with congenital heart defects. During surgery, the patient's own blood is taken in the operating room, after which the blood is processed in a centrifuge and transfused to the patient again.

Since July 2011, the department has been a certified supraregional Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center (certification from the German Society for Cardiology - Cardiovascular Research, the German Society for Pediatric Cardiology, and the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery).

The department's range of medical services includes:

  • Surgical repair of anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery
  • Surgical treatment of aortic valve regurgitation, including the Ross procedure
  • Surgical repair of aortic valve stenosis
  • Surgical treatment of aortic coarctation
  • Surgical treatment of tetralogy of Fallot
  • Surgical repair of abnormal pulmonary venous drainage
  • Surgical repair of Ebstein's anomaly
  • Surgical treatment of persistent truncus arteriosus
  • Surgical repair of transposition of the great vessels
  • Surgical treatment of univentricular heart defects
  • Surgical repair of an interrupted aortic arch
  • Surgical repair of ventricular septal defects
  • Surgical repair of atrial septal defects
  • Other surgical options

Curriculum vitae

Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Hörer is the Head of the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Congenital Heart Defect Surgery at the German Heart Center Munich. From 2011 to 2015, Jürgen Hörer was the Deputy Head of this department and Assistant Professor for Surgery at the Technical University of Munich. In addition, the professor worked as the Head of the Department of Congenital Heart Diseases at the Marie Lannelongue Hospital, Le Plessis-Robinson, France.

Prof. Hörer’s research activities are currently focused on such fields as the evaluation of indicators for predicting mortality and morbidity after surgical treatment of congenital heart pathologies in adults, the assessment of heart functionality and the quality of life of patients after the classic Fontan procedure, and the evaluation of treatment options for patients with corrected transposition of the great arteries.

Prof. Hörer is a member of many organizations, including the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS), the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association, the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and the French Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
