About the department

The Department of General and Abdominal Surgery at the Hospital Harlaching Munich provides high-quality surgical treatment of inflammatory diseases and cancers of the abdominal cavity and anterior abdominal wall. Whenever possible, the specialists prefer sparing minimally invasive surgical techniques. The department's team of surgeons has a wealth of experience in the field of minimally invasive hernia repair, thanks to which it has been awarded the quality certificate of the German Hernia Society (DHG). To provide comprehensive medical care, the department's surgeons cooperate closely with gastroenterologists. In addition, the department's specialists perform interventions to form a vascular access for patients who require dialysis. The key focus of the department's clinical practice is on the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. The medical facility is part of the Cancer Center Munich Süd. More than 2,000 surgical procedures are performed in the department's high-tech operating rooms every year. The Chief Physician of the department is PD Dr. med. Mia Kim.

Nowadays, colon cancer is one of the most common malignant gastrointestinal diseases. The department's doctors have extensive and successful experience in the treatment of this pathology. Cancer treatment is always a complex clinical task, and therefore a special role is given to interdisciplinary collaboration of doctors from related medical disciplines. The department's surgeons cooperate closely with oncologists, radiologists, radiation therapists, chemotherapists and specialists in nuclear medicine. The doctors cooperatively consider a clinical case and develop the optimal treatment regimen, taking into account particular clinical indications, including the stage of cancer, tumor localization, patient's general health condition, his age and other important factors. The department's team of surgeons provides treatment to more than 1,200 patients every year. In the case of colon cancer, surgery is inevitable, so the patient needs hospitalization. In some cases, minimally invasive intervention is possible. At the initial stages of colon cancer, preference is given to endoscopic removal of tumors. Prior to surgery or after it, the patient usually undergoes chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. The department also offers an innovative therapeutic technique called hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC). The essence of this procedure is as follows: after resection of all visible neoplasms, the doctors pour a warmed sterile solution of chemotherapy drugs into the abdominal cavity. Such an approach allows the doctors to destroy the remaining malignant cells in the abdominal cavity, as well as suppress the growth of inoperable tumors. One of the main advantages of the HIPEC technique is its effectiveness even in the advanced stages of cancer. During the entire therapeutic process, cancer patients receive competent psychological care. In addition, the attending physicians devote sufficient time to communication with their patients in order to establish trusting contact, surround them with care and create a friendly atmosphere in the department.

Another important focus of the department's surgeons is gallbladder surgery (as a rule, these are surgical procedures for gallstone disease). The specialists annually perform about 200 interventions in this field. Most gallbladder interventions are performed using sparing minimally invasive techniques. Open operations are performed mainly for malignant tumors. As a rule, after such interventions the patient spends no more than 2-3 days in the hospital.

The department is certified by the German Hernia Society (DHG), and therefore its specialists have exclusive competence in the surgical repair of inguinal hernias, incisional hernias and epigastric hernias. The type of surgical intervention is selected for each patient on an individual basis (Shouldice operation, Lichtenstein operation, transabdominal preperitoneal hernioplasty, total extraperitoneal hernia repair, other interventions). In most cases, the patient can leave the hospital within a day after the operation. It should be noted that the department's specialists are proud of their successful experience in the surgical repair of life-threatening hernias and recurrent hernias.

The department's range of surgical services includes:

  • Surgical treatment of gastrointestinal cancers
  • Surgical treatment of liver and pancreatic cancers
  • Surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)
