About the department

The Department of Urology and Oncourology at the Academic Hospital Marien Duesseldorf offers all services in the field of diagnosis and treatment of urologic diseases. The specialists successfully perform both open and endoscopic, transcutaneous and minimally invasive surgical techniques. The department is part of the Center for Interdisciplinary Robotic Surgery (ZIRO), which provides patients with high-tech medical care at the highest international level. The department is equipped with an innovative da Vinci-X® robotic system, which is the most modern da Vinci robot model for minimally invasive interventions. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Patrick Bastian.

The specialists of the department pay special attention to updating the technical equipment and improving the skills of working with it. Thus, this is one of the few departments in Germany, where the da Vinci-X®robotic system is successfully used. The Da Vinci-X® system is equipped with two independent optical systems transmitting a full-HD (3D) image to the monitor. In addition, the cameras provide an increase in the image up to 15 times. This creates conditions for filigree accurate microsurgery. Performing prostate surgery with the Da Vinci-X® system is a guarantee of maintaining normal urination and sexual function.

Another important department’s focus is the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the urogenital system in men (uro-oncology). Doctors take into account the most subtle features of treatment of different cancer stages. Thus, in the early stages, attention is focused on accurate diagnosis (up to DNA testing), endoscopic treatments and elimination of risk factors for disease recurrence. In the advanced stages, priority is given to operations with the preservation of fertility and sexual function, as well as to adjuvant chemotherapy with the help of innovative drugs. In addition to its own developments, the department actively uses the results of international and European studies. Treatment is provided in close cooperation with gynecologists, oncologists, radiation therapists and general practitioners.

The department’s range of medical services includes:
