The Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist is focused on the surgery of all arteries - from head to toe.
Amongst others, the team of the Department, led by Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Schmitz-Rixen, treats the following arterial diseases:
- Treatment of atherosclerosis of the pelvis and legs (obliterating endarteritis)
- Treatment of carotid artery calcification (carotid stenosis)
- Treatment of aortic aneurysm (thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms)
- Surgery of the veins
Varicose veins are the most common diseases of the veins. Varicose veins manifest themselves in middle and old age. These are nodular enlarged superficial veins, mostly on the lower limbs. The disease has different causes. The Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist offers all conservative and surgical treatments for varicose veins.
In addition, the Department specializes in both surgical and conservative treatment of diabetic foot syndrome and polyneuropathy of the foot (the so-called Charcot foot). There is maintained close cooperation with the University Hospital Frankfurt, as well as with the Department of Diabetology at the Sachsenhausen Hospital.
In most cases more severe diseases, such as diabetic foot syndrome or open venous insufficiency with trophic disorders (“open leg”) due to the long-term varicose veins, cannot be treated conventionally on an outpatient basis. In these cases, the physicians of the Department offer treatment regimens that correspond to the stage of the disease. These include a variety of methods ranging from surgical wound cleansing up to vacuum therapy. For the wounds that require complex care the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist provides treatment meeting the very latest treatment standards.
The main treatment focuses of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist are:
- Arterial and venous diseases
Atherosclerosis of the vessels of the pelvis and lower limb arteries or aortic aneurysm
Balloon dilatation and stent implantation
- Surgery for varicose veins
Surgical and minimally invasive techniques with the use of catheters
- Diabetic foot syndrome
