The department provides top-class surgical services according to modern standards, and also offers high professionalism and vast experience of the best German surgeons.

The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Michael Schön. According to the Focus magazine, Prof. Schön ranks among the top German specialists in the surgical treatment of diseases of the abdominal cavity, gallbladder and bariatric surgery!

The department includes a highly modern Obesity Center. The therapeutic options include both conservative and interventional treatment regimens, which are individually adapted to the needs of each patient. The department performs more than 150 bariatric interventions annually. Thanks to the unique expert knowledge and successful treatment results, the center was awarded the title of the Competence Obesity Center.

Another important department’s focus is the treatment of intestinal diseases, including surgery of the anal sphincter (within the specialized center). The department's surgeons perform more than 500 intestinal interventions annually. If possible, the surgeons perform minimally invasive interventions, including using a robotic system. The department specializes in transanal endoscopic microsurgery, rectal resection using TaTME technique (transanal total mesorectal excision) and other surgical techniques. To treat chronic recurrent diverticulitis (the most common inflammatory bowel disease), the department applies laparoscopic anterior resection of the rectum. Of particular interest is the treatment of bowel cancer. The doctors’ tasks in this field also include the treatment of hemorrhoids, anal fistulas, abscesses, fissures, pathological skin changes in the anal area, etc.

The department's surgeons also have excellent hernia repair skills. The department annually performs more than 300 operations to treat hernias using all modern surgical techniques in this field. Such operations are performed using combined techniques, namely, open intervention is combined with minimally invasive techniques. Depending on the specific clinical cases, the operation can be carried out both on an inpatient and outpatient basis.
