About the department
The Department of Dermatology at the Asan Medical Center offers diagnosis and treatment of all dermatological diseases. The department is equipped with the latest technologies including dye laser and carbon dioxide laser systems, copper vapor laser, Alexandrite Laser, QSNd-YAG, V-Beam, etc. The particular attention is given to treatment of skin cancer. The department is headed by Dr. Chong-hyun Won.
Skin cancer is treated within the specialized Skin Cancer Center. AMC Skin Cancer Center has highly-trained medical professionals with a lot of experience with various types of skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma as well as relatively rare skin cancers like melanoma and Paget disease. For Mohs surgery and skin cancer diagnosis, outstanding dermatopathology specialists closely cooperate with related departments to develop the treatment plan for diagnosis and surgery. The center also offers postoperative care and scar treatment using cutting-edge laser instrument and treatment devices based on sufficient experience in the procedures.
The department offers both surgical and non-surgical treatment. If a patient is in old age and/or does not want surgical treatment for cosmetic reasons, non-surgical options are used. All common non-surgical methods are available including imiquimod application, photodynamic therapy, cryo-therapy in case of actinic keratosis or intraepithelial carcinoma and ablative laser therapy.
In the field of surgical treatment, the department specializes in Mohs micrographic surgery, which has the merit of preserving normal tissues as much as possible if skin cancer occurred in important organs in the functional and cosmetic aspects like the eyes, nose, and ears or the adjacent area. This special technique removes pieces of skin cancer tissues little by little and sees if there are cancer cells in the pieces through the microscope, then draws a map that depicts the location of tumors. This process is repeated until the skin cancer cells are completely eliminated.
The Skin Cancer Center is committed to providing skin cancer patients with best treatment and medical services based on a patient-centric systematic treatment system and great teamwork among the country’s leading specialists.
