The Department of Endoprosthetics at the ATOS ORTHOPARC Clinic Cologne offers the full range of services in this field and specializes in artificial knee and hip replacement. It has all the technical means and special implants of the world's best manufacturers for performing interventions even in the most difficult clinical situations. Also, the scope of tasks of the department’s surgeons includes revision interventions and treatment of periprosthetic fractures. The department is proud of its outstanding achievements and high level of treatment success, based on many years of experience and exceptional professionalism of doctors.
The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Joachim Schmidt, who has performed more than 10,000 operations to replace the knee and hip joints. He is an internationally recognized expert in his area of his specialization and has been helping people restore joint health for over 30 years.
Due to the continuous development of medical technologies and the use of advanced methods, the department achieves outstanding results in the field of knee and hip replacement surgery. In particular, knee joint replacement with an artificial one is performed in case of severe arthrosis, in which conservative treatment can no longer be effective. To achieve optimal results, individual factors, such as patient’s gender, height, weight and physical activities are necessarily taken into account when planning an operation.
The surgical methods used in the department make it possible to perform a more accurate installation of the prosthesis than when performing a CT-guided intervention. When performing knee replacement surgery, an unbound superficial prosthesis with the patient’s own ligaments is used as a standard prosthesis. To ensure safety, the prosthesis is secured with an additional gluing cement layer during the surgery. As international studies show, this implant is considered to be the best in respect of its long-term functionality: almost 99% of such implants retain their functionality after 10 years. In addition, in partial joint damage, there can be used a minimally invasive technique to implant an unicondylar sliding prosthesis. In other cases, in individual characteristics (for example, malformations, bone defects, ligament instability, etc.) special modular implants can help.
It should be noted that the specialists of the department not only strive to ensure high-quality surgical intervention, but also take care of the full postoperative recovery of the patient. In this regard, the department has implemented a specialized Rapid Recovery Program, which takes into account all the nuances of treating patients who have undergone knee or hip endoprosthetics. This rehabilitation program is a unique offer and allows the patient to recover in just a few days. It consists of four key elements, which include a special seminar for the patient at the preoperative stage aimed at providing him with comprehensive information about the upcoming procedure, risks, rehabilitation, etc., communication with the patients who have previously undergone a certain type of intervention or who have to undergo such treatment, early mobilization and individually adapted pain therapy. The Rapid Recovery Program helps to optimize the treatment process and provide speedy recovery for each patient.
