About the department
The Department of Gastroenterology at the Cancer Center Frankfurt am Main in cooperation with the Goethe University offers diagnostics and conservative, as well as outpatient surgical treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. The department specializes in cancer prevention, endoscopic studies of the stomach and intestines, endoscopic removal of malignant neoplasms, etc. Thanks to cooperation with the Goethe University, the very latest medical achievements are available for the treatment of patients. The Chief Physician of the department is Dr. med. Hans-Jörg Cordes.
Key attention is paid to the thorough diagnosis of oncological diseases of the gastrointestinal organs. To this end, sonography (including fibroscanning), CT/MRI of the abdominal organs, all types of endoscopic studies with biopsy, ultrasound-guided liver biopsy are available in the department. Mandatory histological examination of tissue samples provides accurate information about the type of tumor and allows planning an effective treatment.
Another important focus is the comprehensive prevention of oncopathology of the gastrointestinal organs. The examination is followed by the determination of a risk group for each patient, which takes into account genetic predisposition (cases of gastrointestinal cancer in relatives), chronic and background diseases, individual factors. The patients from the high-risk group undergo regular endoscopic examinations and a blood test for specific tumor markers (CA 242, CA 19-9).
