The Department of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology at the Children's Academic Hospital "Amsterdamer", headed by Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Boemers, offers a wide range of services. All types of surgery with the exception of heart surgery are performed here. With 80 beds, the Department is the biggest Pediatric Surgery Department in Germany. Every year, more than 5,500 surgical operations are carried out under anesthesia.

The Department of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology at the Children's Academic Hospital "Amsterdamer" has special expertise and experience in diseases and abnormalities of the urinary tract (kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra and male genital organs). Patients with congenital abnormalities, such as undescended testicles, hypospadias, reflux or varicocele, as well as functional disorders (e.g. bladder voiding disorder) are treated here. In the field of diagnostics and therapy, the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Boemers works in a close cooperation with the other departments of the Children's Academic Hospital "Amsterdamer", e.g. the Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and Pediatric Radiology. Moreover, the Pediatric Urology also provides special urotherapy and continence treatment.

A particular focus in the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology is put on care of children with complex malformations of the continence organs (bladder exstrophy, anorectal, cloacal malformations, cloacal exstrophy, etc.). Not only children with complex malformations of the continence organs from all over Germany, but also children from abroad come to the Children's Academic Hospital "Amsterdamer" for treatment. Another focus area is treatment of children with malformations of the urethra or genital organs as well as sexual differentiation disorders of the external genitalia. The Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Boemers is part of the Continence Centre, which includes hospitals in Cologne.

The Department of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology has received the “Ausgezeichnet. Für Kinder” seal of quality from the Association of Pediatric Hospitals and Pediatric Departments in Germany (GKinD) for an outstanding treatment quality.
