Location

Cologne is a city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located on the banks of the picturesque Rhine River. The city is known as one of the largest economic and cultural centers in Germany. It is also one of the oldest German cities (founded 2000 years ago), and therefore it offers its guests many fascinating and impressive historical monuments.

For many centuries, the famous Cologne Cathedral, built in the Gothic style, has been the symbol of the city. The first stone in the foundation of Cologne Cathedral, which was built on the site of more ancient Christian churches, was laid in 1228 by Konrad von Hochstaden, Archbishop of Cologne. This was the beginning of the grandiose construction of the cathedral masterpiece, which was designed to outshine other temples. Cologne Cathedral can be seen from almost any place in the city. The temple amazes with its wide facades, towers extending to the clouds, and magnificent stained glass windows. In addition to the cathedral, the city has twelve Romanesque churches, the most interesting of which are the Great St. Martin Church, St. Andrew's Church, the Basilica of St. Severin, and others.

Cologne also offers many interesting museums. The first step is to go to the Chocolate Museum. It is located just a 10-minute leisurely walk from the center and looks like a ship. During the excursion, the guests have the opportunity to follow the process of making chocolate, see the work process of the workshop, which produces about 400 kg of products daily, see the main components of sweet bars, admire the ancient packaging of famous brands (Mars, Milka, and Nutella), and even visit a greenhouse with tropical plants, which provide ingredients for desserts. If you are indifferent to sweets, you can go to the Fragrance Museum. The expositions in the museum provide a clear idea of how the aromas were obtained in different eras and sold in bottles. One can also visit the Romano-Germanic Museum and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum.

Cologne has many restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisines. Of course, the most popular among city guests are the restaurants serving traditional German cuisine. The main concentration of restaurants, old pubs, and bakeries is in Old Town, or Altstadt. In addition, Cologne offers the greatest shopping opportunities. The city center houses huge shopping arcades with hundreds of boutiques and shops, a significant part of which are premium brands. The largest shopping centers are Neumarkt Passage, Opern-Passagen, and WDR Arcade.
