About the department
The Department of Adult and Pediatric Dermatology, Allergology, Phlebology and Proctology at the Dermatologikum Clinic Berlin provides the full range of medical services in its areas of competence. The focus of the department's doctors is on patients with various skin diseases. Of particular interest is the treatment of skin cancer, inflammatory and immunological skin diseases, and allergic skin lesions. The department's dermatologists treat adults and children with skin diseases. In addition, the department offers many services in the field of aesthetic dermatology, including Botox and hyaluronic acid injections, peeling, and laser aesthetic procedures. The department's medical team is also competent in providing medical care to patients with venous diseases and proctological pathologies. The department has excellent infrastructure for effective treatment: modern diagnostic rooms, a day clinic, a specialized section for allergology, a center for laser dermatology, two operating rooms, light therapy rooms, and a center for aesthetic dermatology. A highly qualified team of doctors, consisting of 8 specialists, 4 of whom are professors, takes care of the health of patients. Each of the physicians has more than 20 years of successful clinical experience, so patients confidently trust them with their health. There is a pleasant atmosphere in the medical facility. Doctors are always open to dialogue with the patient and make every effort to ensure that everyone receives first-class medical services.
The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Uwe Trefzer, a highly competent dermatologist who has been treating common and particularly complex skin diseases in adults and children for more than 20 years. The specialist graduated from the University of Freiburg and trained in the UK, Switzerland, Israel, and the USA. For almost 20 years, Prof. Trefzer worked in the Department of Dermatology at the Charite University Hospital Berlin, which is the best medical complex in Germany and one of the most renowned hospitals worldwide. Dr. Uwe Trefzer also conducts productive research activities, the results of which are presented in more than 100 scientific works. In addition, he has been repeatedly ranked among the best dermatologists in Germany by Focus magazine.
The department specializes in the treatment of skin cancer and enjoys an excellent reputation in this medical field. The healthcare facility regularly treats patients with basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, Kaposi's sarcoma, and other skin tumors. During their many years of clinical practice, specialists have encountered a wide variety of tumors and have the necessary professional skills and expertise to provide the most effective treatment, tailored to the individual needs of the patient.
A patient with a suspected malignant skin neoplasm will have to undergo a comprehensive diagnosis, including a clinical examination, computer-assisted dermatoscopy, a skin biopsy with the subsequent histological examination of the obtained biological material, imaging studies to exclude distant metastases (X-ray, CT, and/or MRI), and laboratory tests. Based on the results of the preliminary diagnosis, the department’s specialists develop an individual treatment regimen, taking into account the type of skin cancer, the patient's general condition, age, and other factors. Treatment of superficial skin tumors includes laser ablation with a fractional CO2 laser, cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy, or electroexcision. These procedures are performed using local anesthetics. The second-line treatment is surgery. Surgical interventions for skin cancer are most often performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. The department's doctors always take into account the aesthetic aspect, especially when tumors are localized on the skin of the face and neck. In many cases, surgery is complemented by chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and radiation therapy. The department's specialists strictly follow the current clinical protocols and recommendations of professional societies. It is worth noting that the medical facility is one of the first in Germany and Europe to offer patients innovative methods for treating skin cancer. For example, the department's physicians became one of the pioneers in the treatment of melanoma using immunotherapy with BRAF inhibitors and Ipilimumab (Yervoy) antibodies.
A team of dermatologists sees patients with benign skin diseases almost daily. The specialists often encounter in their practice psoriasis, eczema, bullous dermatoses, acne, and rosacea. Patients with nevi, vitiligo, age spots, urticaria, systemic lupus erythematosus, hyperhidrosis, alopecia, excess hair growth (hypertrichosis), and other pathologies of the skin and its appendages can also receive medical care here. For the treatment of such diseases, clinicians use pills, creams, ointments, gels, phototherapy, photodynamic therapy, laser procedures, and other effective therapeutic methods.
The medical facility also offers a wide range of services in the field of aesthetic dermatology. Rejuvenating procedures such as hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin injections, peeling, and skin rejuvenation using the Fraxel laser are especially popular. Before the cosmetic procedure, an individual consultation takes place, during which a specialist assesses the condition of the skin and selects the optimal method to solve the aesthetic problem. A combination of several cosmetic procedures is quite often recommended to achieve the best results. The dermatologists in the department are responsible for hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin injections and laser procedures, while peeling is performed by qualified cosmetologists.
An integral part of the department's clinical practice is the diagnosis and treatment of skin allergies. The department's doctors provide medical care to patients with pollen allergies, pet allergies, insect venom allergies, chemical allergies, food allergies, and medication allergies. The diagnosis for allergies includes the appropriate skin tests and laboratory tests. As for the treatment, the most effective method in the fight against allergies today is allergen-specific immunotherapy (hyposensitization).
The department's dermatologists also specialize in the treatment of spider veins and varicose veins. Doctors at the medical facility successfully perform sclerotherapy or laser therapy to eliminate spider veins. In some cases, specialists may combine these procedures. To determine the optimal treatment option for varicose veins for the patient, the department's clinicians perform ultrasound diagnostics (color Doppler and duplex sonography) of the superficial and deep blood vessels of the lower extremities. Compression therapy is usually offered as a first-line treatment, but this method only relieves symptoms and slows the progression of the disease. The second-line treatment is the ClosureFast™ procedure. In the advanced stages of varicose veins, the department’s specialists perform foam sclerotherapy or mini-phlebectomy. All procedures are performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. After interventions for varicose veins, it is recommended to wear compression stockings for 7 days to 4 weeks to prevent postoperative thrombosis.
The therapeutic offer of the department is complemented by the treatment of proctological diseases such as hemorrhoids, anal itching, anal condylomas, anal tumors, anal abscesses, anal fistulas, and anal fissures. The most common proctological disease in the clinical practice of the department's doctors is hemorrhoids. The specialists perform sclerotherapy or latex ligation to treat this condition. Both procedures provide good results and almost do not cause any trauma.
