Vegetative-vascular dystonia (VVD) is a complex of symptoms caused by a change in the activity of the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for the functioning of all organs. It regulates blood pressure, heart rate, and smooth muscle tone, that is, all muscles that we do not consciously control. These muscles are located in the uterus, stomach, lower esophagus, intestines, etc.

Vegetative dystonia causes violations in the regulation of many organism functions. This condition is not life-threatening and does not pose any serious complications, but it causes internal organ dysfunction and unpleasant symptoms that reduce the quality of human life. VVD is not regarded as a disease but as a feature of the organism. The risk of developing vegetative dystonia is highest in childhood and adolescence, and over the years it decreases. You can make an appointment for your treatment abroad through the Booking Health service to get rid of the manifestations of VVD. In developed countries, you will receive high-quality medical services.

What is vegetative-vascular dystonia?

A VVD-like condition was first described by Da Costa in 1871 during the American Civil War. This was called "a soldier's excitable heart". The author described signs developing in the heart, respiratory and digestive systems, as well as mental disorders.

Previously, it was the term VVD that was widely used, but today it is absent from the international classification of diseases. Instead of this term, there are other diagnoses, such as violations of the autonomic nervous system or somatoform dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.

Clinical signs

Vegetative-vascular dystonia can be manifested by the following symptoms:

  • syncope and presyncope;
  • a slight increase in body temperature;
  • sweating;
  • decrease or increase in the frequency of heart contractions;
  • heart pain;
  • painful muscle tension;
  • numbness;
  • anxiety;
  • headache;
  • high or low blood pressure;
  • constipation or diarrhea;
  • nausea and heartburn.

This is just a small list of the most common manifestations. In total, more than 150 symptoms and 32 syndromes that develop in patients with VVD are described in the literature. The most common syndromes include the following:

  • cardialgic syndrome (violations in the heart work);
  • respiratory syndrome (shortness of breath and sensation of a lump in the throat);
  • asthenic syndrome (weakness, low activity, fatigue, weakened willpower, and inadequate sleep).

An autonomic dysfunction can be not only primary but also secondary, developing for the reasons of neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, etc.

But more often than not, VVD develops as a primary syndrome. The risk of its occurrence is especially high during the period of hormonal changes, for example, during adolescence or during menopause. The development of vegetative-vascular dystonia often initiates severe stress.

Vegetative dystonia does not directly threaten human life. With a long course of the syndrome, however, many other diseases can join it, including irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia (symptoms caused by stomach disorders), heart arrhythmias, etc. All of these conditions are potentially reversible but require long-term treatment as symptoms persist for years.

Diagnostics

VVD is a diagnosis of exclusion. The presence of vegetative-vascular dystonia can be concluded only if the diagnostic examination has not revealed any other reasons for health deterioration, including:

  • hypothyroidism (thyroid dysfunction);
  • heart defects;
  • tumors;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • spinal diseases, etc.

If the patient's examination has not revealed any organic diseases but functional disorders persist, they are due to the violations of nervous system regulation.

How can VVD be treated?

VVD treatment is ongoing. Therapy aims to improve a person's quality of life by relieving symptoms.

Below are some treatment options that can be used:

  • psychotherapy;
  • breathing exercises;
  • relaxation techniques;
  • therapeutic exercises;
  • massage;
  • physiotherapy;
  • climatotherapy.

If non-drug treatments do not help, pharmacotherapy can be used. Doctors prescribe symptomatic treatment, which depends on the prevailing clinical signs. The following medicines can be used:

  • antidepressants;
  • anti-anxiety medications;
  • tonic drugs;
  • antispasmodics for abdominal pain;
  • laxatives;
  • antacids;
  • medications for blood pressure correction;
  • sleeping pills;
  • painkillers, etc.

Where to seek medical attention for vegetative-vascular dystonia?

You can undergo your treatment abroad. In developed countries, you will receive top-class medical services. Whenever possible, doctors eliminate most of the manifestations of VVD by non-drug methods, as they provide a more long-term result. A quick effect can be achieved with the help of pharmacotherapy for the disease, which will be canceled over time.

If you are undergoing your treatment abroad, you can be sure that you will be carefully diagnosed. The diagnostic examination is required to rule out a dangerous disease that occurs under the guise of vegetative dystonia.
