About the department
The Department of Otolaryngology at the DKD HELIOS Clinic Wiesbaden offers all the options of modern medicine for the diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the ear, throat and nose. The department specializes in the surgical treatment of diseases of the ENT organs. Most surgical procedures are performed on an inpatient basis, while minor interventions can be outpatient (for example, adenoidectomy, tympanic membrane paracentesis). The department's otolaryngologists mostly use sparing minimally invasive surgical techniques, which have a number of advantages over conventional open surgery: mild pain, minimal risk of postoperative complications and a short hospitalization period. The availability of state-of-the-art equipment in the department, extensive clinical experience of doctors, an integrated approach to therapy and an individual attitude to each patient guarantee high-quality medical care. Each treatment regimen is unique, as it is developed based on the specific clinical data of the patient, while the use of the very latest therapeutic methods ensure high treatment efficiency. The Chief Physician of the department is Dr. med. Mohamed Abdel-Aziz.
The department's medical team provides modern treatment of diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses, which can cause difficulty nasal breathing, painful sensations, decreased sense of smell, nosebleeds and other unpleasant symptoms. Doctors often deal with the treatment of patients with sinusitis, rhinitis, deviated septum, polyps and cysts in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. After a comprehensive diagnostic examination, including rhinoscopy, endoscopic examinations, X-ray and CT scanning, the specialists select an optimal complex of therapeutic measures. For example, if a patient has sinusitis, the first-line treatment is drug therapy, while surgery is used only in severe cases. In case of deviated septum, nasal polyps and cysts, the only effective treatment is surgery. Thanks to the excellent technical equipment in the department's operating rooms and a good training of otolaryngologists, they mostly use sparing laparoscopic techniques. When performing such operations, a surgical access is provided through several small skin incisions, which is an indisputable advantage for the patient.
The treatment of diseases of the external, middle and inner ear is of no less interest to the specialists of the medical facility. The focus of doctors is on the patients with otitis media, hearing loss, tinnitus, Meniere's disease, traumatic ear injuries and congenital ear defects. When making a diagnosis confirming inflammatory and infectious diseases in patients, the department's doctors usually use only drug treatment (antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, drops and intra-aural injections). If conservative treatment does not give a good result, doctors decide to perform surgery. The operations on the external, middle and inner ear are performed using modern microsurgical techniques.
The therapeutic options of the department are complemented by throat surgery, for example, to remove pharyngeal and palatine tonsils (partial or total removal), endoscopic tracheal surgery (for example, for stenosis, foreign bodies), interventions to resect median and lateral cysts of the neck, cervical lymphadenectomy to remove cervical lymph nodes, etc. The department's competence also includes uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, which is a surgical procedure to treat snoring. Otolaryngologists of the medical facility have a wealth of clinical experience, and therefore they demonstrate high rates of success in the surgical treatment.
The department's range of medical services includes:
- Outpatient ENT surgery
- Adenoidectomy (surgical removal of the adenoid glands)
- Paracentesis (surgical drainage of the middle ear to remove pus in case of otitis media)
- Endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients with laryngeal diseases
