About the department

The Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Treatment of Congenital Heart Defects at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW Bad Oeynhausen provides the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services in these medical fields. The department specializes in treating congenital heart defects in children, adolescents, and adults. The medical facility has 36 beds to accommodate young patients. The department also has an Intensive Care Unit with 16 beds. The Head Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Stephan Schubert. He is a highly qualified specialist with a worldwide reputation who has saved many children's lives.

In addition to drug therapy, sparing catheter-based techniques are used here. In a specialized Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, more than 500 catheter-based interventions are performed annually in young patients with congenital heart defects. More than 4,000 children receive counseling and medical care on an outpatient basis. The department's cardiologists also treat about 1,000 adult patients with congenital heart disease each year. Parents and relatives are directly involved in the treatment process, since their support and assistance for young patients is one of the keys to the successful completion of therapy. The outstanding quality of medical care is confirmed by the ever-increasing number of patients who seek medical attention at the department.

Thanks to the presence of advanced diagnostic equipment in the department, many congenital heart defects can be detected in a child even before birth, in the womb. The department's cardiologists use modern ultrasound technology called fetal echocardiography to detect congenital heart defects in the fetus. About 120 such examinations are carried out here every year, after which the expectant mother receives counseling and the necessary recommendations. The department's diagnostic options also include 3D ultrasound scans, echocardiography, heart MRI scans, and other tests.

The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory has state-of-the-art medical equipment adapted to the needs of the child's body. All types of sparing diagnostic and therapeutic catheter-based procedures are performed here, which are used in the treatment of complex heart defects. Catheter-based interventions are most often used for aortic stenosis and pulmonary artery stenosis, as well as for atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, patent foramen ovale, and atrial appendage defects. It should be noted that the high professionalism of the department's doctors allows them to perform sparing treatment on premature babies weighing up to 2000 grams. The department performs more than 500 catheter-based procedures on the heart every year. The department's specialists are highly professional in their field of competence and make every effort to provide the child with effective treatment and the opportunity to lead a full life.

Pediatric cardiologists at the medical facility also successfully cope with myocarditis, cardiomyopathies, heart failure, and heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias). As a rule, the specialists use various drug therapy regimens to treat the above-mentioned heart diseases.

The department's range of medical services includes:

  • Diagnostics and treatment of atrial septal defects
  • Diagnostics and treatment of ventricular septal defects
  • Diagnostics and treatment of tetralogy of Fallot
  • Diagnostics and treatment of cardiomyopathies
