Location
Bern is the capital of Switzerland and a beautiful city located on the hills in the picturesque valley of the Aare River. The Old City of Bern has retained a unique historical atmosphere, thanks to which it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is here that the largest number of interesting architectural and historical places are concentrated.
One of the main and most amazing monuments of the city is the Bernese Cathedral – a magnificent example of late Gothic architecture and the largest church in Switzerland. Facing a beautiful late Gothic style facade, one should definitely pay attention to the bas-reliefs located above the main entrance. Here one can see 217 figures with an amazing elaboration of details representing the scenes of the Last Judgment. The interior of the cathedral is interesting for carved wooden choirs in the Renaissance style, furnishings of the 16th century and stained glass windows of the mid-15th century.
The Clock Tower with a magnificent medieval astronomical clock is also popular among the city guests. The construction of the tower dates back to the 13th century. Its clockwork consists of five elements: the clockwork itself, two devices that ensure the striking of the clock, and two devices responsible for the movement of figures. The astrolabe combined with a clock shows the sky and the horizon line, the position of the Earth, planets and constellations. One should definitely pay attention to the niche located to the right of the astrolabe, because 4 minutes before the end of each hour a real performance is played here with the participation of watch figures: rooster, bears, the god of time Chronos, the knight Hans von Tann and others.
A unique and at the same time impressive place in the city is the Bear Park built in honor of the symbol of the city – the bear. The bears live on a wonderful territory (about 6,000 square meters), where they can fish, play, climb trees. The modern possessions of the bears are located opposite the historical part of Bern.
Other fascinating sights of the city also include the Federal Palace, Einstein House, Jegenstorf Castle Museum, History Museum, Botanical Garden, Rose Garden and others.
