Prof. Hemmer has been heading the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich since 2007. He specializes in neuroimmunology. In his work, the doctor pays special attention to the study of B cells and T cells in inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system, especially in multiple sclerosis. In addition, he studies the genetic factors associated with the development and treatment of multiple sclerosis.

After studying medicine, Prof. Hemmer defended his doctoral dissertation (1991) at the University of Freiburg. Having received a scholarship from the German Research Foundation, in 1995 the professor went to the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, USA. The doctor had his internship at the University Hospitals Freiburg and Marburg. In the University Hospital Marburg, he had a position of the Senior Physician, whereas in the Hospital Düsseldorf he served as the Deputy Head of the department. Since 2007, Prof. Hemmer has been appointed as a Full Professor at the Technical University of Munich. He is an Acting Official Representative of the Center of Excellence for Multiple Sclerosis, as well as a Member of the Medical Advisory Board of the German Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich offers the full range of services in this medical field. The department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, for example, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease. To provide comprehensive, individual medical care, the department has a modern Diagnostic Unit, a special Outpatient Clinic, a Stroke Unit with the latest technical equipment and an interdisciplinary Intensive Care Unit. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Bernhard Hemmer.

The department treats about 3,500 inpatients and several thousand outpatients every year. A medical team consisting of 50 competent doctors takes care of their well-being. The modern medical institution combines the highest level of medical knowledge, advanced technical equipment and a pleasant, friendly atmosphere.
