About the department
The Department of Adult and Pediatric Dermatology, Allergology at the ISAR Hospital Munich provides the full range of modern diagnostics and treatments in its areas of specialization. The department's team of dermatologists focuses on patients with skin cancer: squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The department's doctors also regularly see patients with benign skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, and urticaria. The medical facility has extensive experience in the treatment of autoimmune skin diseases such as pemphigus, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic scleroderma, and dermatomyositis. The department operates a Center for Aesthetic Dermatology, whose specialists offer a variety of anti-aging cosmetic procedures, laser removal of angiomas and pigment spots, and scar revision. The department's therapeutic offer is complemented by the treatment of allergic diseases with skin manifestations. The department's doctors are highly skilled in all techniques available in modern dermatology, including laser therapy, phototherapy, and photodynamic therapy. The priority of the department is to provide personalized medical care in a comfortable environment for the patient.
The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. mult. Thomas Ruzicka. The specialist has extensive clinical experience: for 12 years he headed the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, which is the largest Dermatology Center in Europe, and for 13 years he headed the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Duesseldorf. Prof. Thomas Ruzicka has been treating skin diseases for over 40 years and is one of the best dermatologists in Germany and Europe. He is the author of more than 1,000 scientific publications, an honorary doctor of Vilnius University in Lithuania and the University of Szeged in Hungary, and the recipient of a huge number of awards and prizes.
Skin cancer is a widespread oncological disease, and many patients with this diagnosis seek medical help from the department. The specialists successfully treat squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. A comprehensive examination is performed to confirm the diagnosis, which includes dermatoscopy, optical coherence tomography, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and ultrasound scanning of regional lymph nodes. Based on the results of the preliminary diagnostics, dermatologists develop an individual treatment regimen. The department’s specialists perform photodynamic therapy to treat actinic keratosis (a precancerous condition). Photodynamic therapy, laser therapy, and/or medicated cream therapy are used to treat superficial forms of squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. The second-line treatment for squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma is surgery. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.
Melanoma is one of the most aggressive skin tumors, characterized by active metastasis. Patients with this diagnosis are indicated for surgery. In advanced stages, surgical removal of lymph nodes, drug therapy (chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or immunotherapy), and radiation therapy may be additionally performed.
The department's dermatologists specialize in treating the full range of benign skin diseases. Doctors often treat patients with atopic dermatitis. This skin disease affects both adults and children. The basis of treatment for atopic dermatitis is skin care with softening and moisturizing creams and ointments. Phototherapy is also successfully used to combat the disease in adults. As a rule, the duration of treatment is 2-3 weeks, and phototherapy procedures are performed several times a week. During the treatment of complex forms of atopic dermatitis, the department’s specialists also use immunotherapeutic drugs.
The department offers many services in the field of aesthetic dermatology, such as wrinkle correction using botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid injections, facial and neck skin rejuvenation using peelings, microneedling, and laser facelifts with Fraxel laser, and skin rejuvenation in the décolleté area using photodynamic therapy. All cosmetic procedures are performed by qualified doctors under absolutely sterile conditions. The extensive clinical experience of the department's dermatologists allows them to select for each patient the optimal aesthetic procedure or a combination of procedures to achieve the best results. The department also performs laser removal of age spots, angiomas, and scars.
In the field of allergology, the department's specialists treat contact allergies, pollen allergies, pet allergies, food allergies, and medication allergies. At the diagnostic stage, doctors study the patient's medical history and perform skin tests (prick tests, patch tests, etc.) and laboratory tests. Treatment may include medications (for example, antihistamines) and/or allergen-specific immunotherapy, which involves the continuous administration of a small dose of the allergen in order to adapt the immune system and avoid an acute reaction.
The main areas of the department's clinical practice include the following:

About hospital
The ISAR Hospital Munich first opened its doors to patients in March 2008 and took a leading position among the top medical facilities in the city of Munich in a short time. The hospital embodies a progressive concept of international medical care: diagnostics and treatment are carried out using the latest medical advances, while the patient receives comprehensive care in a pleasant environment. The work of the medical complex is based on an individual approach to each patient and their clinical case.
The ISAR Hospital Munich has 12 specialized departments, each of which treats a specific group of diseases. The medical facility has particularly successful results in the surgical treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, heart disease, musculoskeletal pathologies, spinal conditions, and urological pathologies. The hospital has a large medical team, which includes more than 850 employees, including well-known professors in professional circles. More than 140,000 patients come here for medical care every year, which indicates the hospital's excellent reputation and a high level of trust among patients. The hospital has 250 beds.
In addition to having highly qualified medical staff, the hospital is proud of its excellent technical base, which largely determines the quality of treatment. In this context, it is worth noting the hospital's operating rooms, which are equipped with state-of-the-art devices. For example, the hospital has the da Vinci robotic system. Robot-assisted operations for gastrointestinal diseases are successfully performed with its help, and the medical complex is one of the few in Germany and Europe that can offer such treatment. The operating rooms of the Department of Spinal Surgery are equipped with the O-Arm intraoperative computed tomography system. This equipment allows for the highest accuracy and safety of surgical manipulations on the spine, because the slightest mistake may lead to disability. The O-Arm device belongs to the category of expensive medical equipment, so not every hospital in Europe can afford it.
The quality of medical services at the ISAR Hospital Munich has been awarded with many prestigious certificates, including the ISO 9001:2015 certificate, the IQM certificate, the certification of the German Society for General and Abdominal Surgery (DGAV) as a Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Surgery, the certificate of the German Society of Cardiology (DGK) for outstanding achievements in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome, the certificate of the German Knee Society (DKG), and others.
