About the department

The Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Foot Surgery at the Academic Hospital Nuremberg offers the full range of diagnostics, conservative and surgical treatment. The key focuses of specialization include the treatment of injuries of varying severity, including sports injuries, joint replacement surgery, treatment of spinal and foot diseases. For outstanding achievements in the treatment of patients with severe injuries, the department was certified by the German Association of Trauma Surgery (DGU) and DIOcert as the "Supra-Regional Trauma Center" of Central Franconia. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Hermann Josef Bail.

The department has more than 90 beds and annually treats about 3,850 inpatients. The department performs all types of emergency operations. In addition, the patients with such oncological diseases as bone metastasis in breast, kidney and lung cancer, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, chondrosarcoma, synovial sarcoma or liposarcoma, undergo surgical treatment here. In the case of detection of spinal metastasis, the doctors perform such reconstructive interventions as kyphoplasty.

The department has been treating the patients with chronic pain in the lower limbs for a long time, as well as chronic soft tissue wounds due to metabolic disorders and complications of diabetes mellitus. Particular attention is paid to forefoot and hindfoot deformities. In this case, the department offers the full range of corrective surgical interventions on an outpatient and inpatient basis.

    • Treatment of complications upon the joint replacement surgery (for example, infections, damages or prosthetic instability, pain)
