Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology

The Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology at the Leverkusen Clinic under the direction of Priv.-Doz. Dr. Jürgen Zumbé provides not only conservative, but also surgical treatment of all diseases of the kidneys, adrenal gland, ureter, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs, including pediatric urology. The service range is completed by the treatment of potency disorders and urinary incontinence.

The Department under the direction of Priv.-Doz. Dr. Jürgen Zumbé is especially focused on the treatment of patients with prostate cancer. The Department has at its command various biopsy techniques, which use ultrasound to detect abnormal tissue structures. Therefore, it is possible to take the tiniest samples to detect pathologies. This method is not only the most accurate, but, above all, it is sparing for the patient. To ensure a successful treatment of cancers, it is important to collaborate with different departments. The Leverkusen Clinic has integrated various medical disciplines in the centers to develop joint treatment programs. The Prostate Cancer Center under the direction of Priv.-Doz. Dr. Jürgen Zumbé carries out regular cancer consultations. In most cases, the treatment includes three elements. Apart from chemotherapy, the Department uses innovative radiation methods and the so-called brachytherapy. According to the Focus magazine rating of 2017, the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology at the Leverkusen Clinic ranks among the top German departments specializing in prostate cancer treatment!

If possible, there is used the so-called keyhole surgery. The Department of Urology under the direction of Priv.-Doz. Dr. Jürgen Zumbé uses this technique even for the cases that previously required major open surgery, e.g. in prostate cancer. Minimally invasive techniques prevail in almost all focuses of the Leverkusen Clinic. These also include modern laser techniques, such as GreenLight laser therapy, as well as other focus of urology – removal of stones. The treatment of urinary incontinence and prolapse in women and men is also of great importance here. These fields are primarily focused on the interdisciplinary cooperation within the Pelvic Floor Center.

Pediatric urology makes up one of the most important focuses of the Leverkusen Clinic. Pediatric urology includes the treatment of diseases and malformations of the child’s genitourinary tract. The range of services covers congenital malformations of the ureteral orifice. Common diagnoses for young patients are also functional disorders, such as enuresis. In addition, there are treated congenital malformations of the urethra (hypospadias, epispadias) or stenosis. Phimosis is the most common disease in the field of pediatric urology.

The treatment focuses of the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology at the Leverkusen Clinic are:

  • Treatment of benign prostatic diseases (endoscopic resections, Greenlight laser, transurethral needle ablation (TUNA))
  • Expanded diagnosis in suspicion of prostatic malignancies by HistoScanningTM
  • Endoscopic (keyhole technique) and robotic (da VinciTM prostatectomy), open surgical treatment of prostatic malignancies or implantation of radioactive elements (brachytherapy)
  • Optimal holistic treatment and postoperative care within the certified Prostate Cancer Center (in cooperation with oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and urologists in private practice
  • Regular interdisciplinary consultations (including “the second opinion” in cancer)
  • Minimally invasive treatment of the urethra by means of modern lithotripters (ESWL) and endoscopic treatments
