About the department

The Department of Gynecology, Urogynecology, Mammology and Obstetrics at the Leverkusen Clinic offers the full range of high quality diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with diseases of the mammary glands, internal and external genitalia. The department's specialists are distinguished by their special competence in the treatment of oncological diseases of the female genital organs and breast cancer. The department has high-tech operating rooms for sparing surgical treatment, namely laparoscopic interventions and da Vinci robot-assisted surgery. The department is a Level I Perinatal Center, so it provides an integrated management of pregnancy, including high-risk pregnancies and multiple pregnancies, as well as a safe delivery and a postpartum care. The department delivers more than 1,800 babies every year. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Kubilay Ertan.

The department's gynecologists provide both diagnostics and treatment to patients with both benign gynecological diseases and malignancies of the female reproductive system. The most common benign diseases that the department's specialists have to deal with are uterine fibroids, endometriosis, cervical dysplasia, ovarian cysts, inflammatory and infectious processes of the female genital organs. The department provides effective treatment for uterine cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer and vulvar cancer. Cancer is a particularly challenging clinical task, so the department's medical team prefers an interdisciplinary approach to therapy. The department regularly holds tumor boards with the participation of gynecologists, oncologists, surgeons, chemotherapists, radiation therapists and radiologists. The experts jointly consider each clinical case and individually elaborate an optimal treatment regimen. When treating cancers in patients of childbearing age, the doctors set themselves the goal of not only completely curing cancer, but also preserving reproductive function.

The department's team of gynecologists has an excellent technical infrastructure. The department offers diagnostic rooms with state-of-the-art ultrasound diagnostic systems, devices for video colposcopy, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy and other studies. In addition, the patients are provided with the full range of laboratory tests of the highest quality. The department includes modern operating rooms fitted out with advanced equipment for performing sparing minimally invasive interventions and robotic operations using the innovative da Vinci Surgical System. The department's gynecologists successfully perform robot-assisted interventions to treat uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse, fallopian tube obstruction, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer and other diseases. Today, such operations are the gold standard of surgery, since they have a number of benefits over classical open operations. These include minimal invasiveness, close to zero risk of developing infections, reduced blood loss, excellent cosmetic results due to the absence of large scars, mild pain, shortest hospitalization periods, and an early return to everyday life. In addition, the absence of the need to perform large incisions on the anterior abdominal wall helps to avoid pronounced adhesions, thanks to which a woman has a better chance of conceiving a child in the future.

Mammology is another important focus of the department's clinical activities. The specialists in this branch of medicine care about the health of the female breast. The key focus is on the treatment of breast cancer, which is one of the most common cancers in women. To prevent the disease, the department is also implementing a breast cancer screening program. The department's diagnostic capabilities in the field of mammology include such studies as digital mammography, high-resolution 3D breast sonography, CT and MRI scans, biopsy, etc. Breast cancer is treated in an interdisciplinary collaboration. A phased therapy plan is elaborated for each patient individually, taking into account her needs and wishes. If necessary, relatives can be involved in the therapeutic process, the patient and her family members are provided with competent psychological care aimed at overcoming an emotional distress after the diagnosis, as well as overcoming fears and worries about the upcoming treatment. The department's mammologists successfully use such breast cancer treatments as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, antibody therapy, surgical treatment, including reconstructive surgery after breast removal. The service range in the field of mammology is also complemented by breast augmentation and reduction surgeries, interventions to correct congenital anomalies of the mammary glands.

The department includes a specialized Pelvic Floor Center, whose priority task is the treatment of urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, chronic constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, inflammatory and infectious bladder diseases. The center is certified by the German Continence Society, which guarantees the provision of high quality medical care according to the highest standards. The center offers the very latest conservative and surgical treatments for the effective elimination of urogynecological pathologies of any severity.

As the Level I Perinatal Center, the department provides top-class services for pregnancy management, delivery and postpartum care for both mother and child. The specialists have a wealth of clinical experience in the management of high-risk pregnancies and multiple pregnancies. The main goal of the department's obstetricians-gynecologists is to provide a safe delivery in a pleasant and friendly environment. The department's delivery rooms are equipped with everything necessary for a safe natural childbirth. If desired, childbirth in water is possible. In case of complications, a caesarean section is performed. The department enjoys a reputation as one of the best maternity hospitals in the region and does everything possible to ensure that such an important event as the birth of a baby goes smoothly.
